Here’s hoping that tram it turns up some day…and hopefully not as Honda hatchbacks and razors.

I’m always quite amazed at the British push for steam preservation, even rebuilding engines that were not saved. It’d be great if we could channel some of that on this end of the pond. Seeing the success of the Tornado Peppercorn Pacific does seem to have spurned a push to rebuild a Pennsylvania Railroad T1 streamliner though so maybe we’ll catch up.

There was actually a project to build a new one a few years back, and the people behind it had gotten pretty far. They got a European steam tram of a similar size and set about converting it into a Y6. Photographs show one of the iconic cow catchers fixed in place.

Unfortunatley, as is the sad case with many heritage railway projects in this country, the two gentlemen working on the engine passed away, bringing the project to a stop. It’s currently unknown what the fate of the tram now is, as the last known record of it is from 2010, where it sold for £22,000 at auction.

Would have been nice if they would have saved one of those. Outside of “Toby” I never even heard of steam trams of this style, or seen a picture of the real ones, until you named it here. British steam engines always seemed to have more decoration than the American counterparts I’m more familiar with. The trams definitely have a well-built style to them.

Oh, and in case anyone’s wondering why they they don’t just put the bike inside the tram, these trams were not designed like that. As shown by the pony on the far right, the water tank and the other inner workings actually make up most of the engine, so there’s no room for storage. There’s only a little room in the front and back ends for the drivers to stand on. Here’s what the inside looks like

“Is it electric?”

Also, I’m American but I’m incredibly biased towards British engines because Thomas the Tank Engine was a big part of my childhood, so these pictures make me smile.
