I think his cutie mark is supposed to mean he’s a “sad sack” character, the kind of person who gets a laugh from folks by having disaster follow him around. Where he went wrong was assuming the disasters were directed at him personally rather than just being part of the act.

I don’t think just being clumsy gets you living alone in a ramshackle shed in the forest, wanted by the law in one of the most forgiving societies ever. I wouldn’t call that a normal life.
To me, he does seem like he genuinely has bad luck.
