Somepony to Watch Over Me and if not for the Crystal Empire Flight to the Finish can be regressed to Season 1, but other than that One Bad Apple is really the last episode you can change the order of, Scare-Master possibly notwithstanding.

I see what you mean. Adding the over-arcing story format to the series does make the earlier episodes a little wonky with continuity. But like I said, it’s kind of a general rule of thumb for a lot of cartoons. Previous episodes happened in the “past”, but the “present” is kind of held in suspended animation where the status quo is always upheld.
 
To use a needlessly complicated metaphor, picture the timeline not as a line starting at the beginning and and progressing forward, but one where the starting point is the “present”, and the “past” continues to stretch farther back as events continue to happen.

Well, early on, the show was supposed to be written in a way that the episodes could be viewed in any order, but after season 3 and season 4 you can’t really do that anymore.
 
And then there’s that upcoming season 5 episode where Rainbow Dash apparently didn’t already know that Tank would hibernate through the winter and tries to stop winter from coming, which REALLY doesn’t make sense continuity-wise.

I think that the general timeline of the show isn’t meant to be taken as seriously as we take it. Back in season 1 they had ponies wrapping up winter just a few weeks before autumn began.
 
It’s the same with pretty much every other cartoon where events happen in chronological order and there’s a definite history, but time never really seems to move forward. Like how the kids in South Park are always canonically 8 years old, even though there have been episodes involving Clinton, Bush, and Obama as the current president at the time. Or how Maggie Simpson is still one year old, twenty-something years later. You just kind of roll with it and not worry about the small stuff.

I still think the line suggesting that there was only one year in between season 1 and season 4 is an error; there is NO way ALL of that could’ve happened in just one year.

That actually does make some sense. We’ll say unicorns might live even longer, assuming they don’t burn themselves out, and pegasi are comparatively mayflies–all in contrast to the immortal Alicorns.

Personally, I like the idea of earth ponies getting ridiculous longevity. It would certainly explain why Mayor Mare feels the need to die her hair; no one takes you seriously in Ponyville unless you look like you’re deep in your first century.
 
Of course, that’s just a matter of personal taste.

I can’t really see ponies being that long-lived, aside from the royal princess sisters.

Then in “Family Appreciation Day”, Granny Smith talks about helping found Ponyville.
 
Ergo, Granny Smith is hundreds of years old.
 
Or we should be careful about taking stuff too seriously. Your choice.
