Not really digging how Chrysalis was relegated to ditzy background pony while Smarty Hooves is making all the shots. I hope the queen (or duchess) takes the destinies of this operation soon… and gets some shipping done with GKS

Agreed, Sunset’s free will wasn’t effected, it was the exact same thing as Luna except her final push down the side of pure corruption was forced by an object of ascension(angelic) or descension(demonic), while Luna ‘gave in’ to the her jealosy and hatred, becoming corrupted by her enormous power. As Sunset herself said, even the power of harmony can be warped into something else.

Although the Equestria Girls didn’t do a really good job at showing it, Sunset did feel there were moral boundaries she didn’t want to cross. While she was arrogant by the time she was a teenager, when she was younger she a sincere and compassionate student, as Celestia said in the comics. However, her lack of friends, lack of close family, and Celestia’s extremely high expectations for her and Sunset’s fear of letting her down(her big issue revealed in Rainbow Rocks) eventually made her self-centered and arrogant. I’m not shifting the blame away from Sunset, I’m just saying there was no brainwashing involved to make Sunset good, Sunset simply didn’t want to be the selfish girl she was for the past several years after seeing her corruption first hand.

Precisely. One of the main miconceptions for people who only read the first 2 issues of the Nightmare Rarity arc was that the transformation caused her to be evil, a story Luna told the Mane 6 which she internally admitted she was lying about, and in the last issue admitted to all of Ponyville that Nightmare Rarity and the Nightmare forces were all came from her heart. Only Luna could stop Nightmare Moon from existing for good by fully resolving Nightmare Moon physically and mentally.

(One very important detail to keep in mind, something they only mentioned in FF #7, is that both Luna AND Celestia were trained to act as distant royalty 1000 years ago. And with Luna representing the night combined with that fact, its no wonder she felt unloved over time.)

Sunset was a special case…the Element of Magic enhanced the corruption that was already there forcefully. to the point human Sunset was in tears before and after her demon transformation. Once she resolved the change, there was no remaining evil except inside her own heart, which dwindled fast due to her will and her friends.

In the case of Alt. Sombra, the concept is similar to Nightmare Rarity. Alternate Luna and even Alternate Celestia still had the capacity and desire for good, however small it was for Celestia. Alt. Sombra willingly became the host to their evil, similar but different to Rarity, but since he has a strong will, he is able to at least keep himself away from the people. Whether Sombra can maintain that and eventually defeat that corruption depends on Sombra’s willingness to be evil or stay good, and Alt Celestia and Alt Luna’s willingness to be good or stay evil.

It all depends on their will and the new choices they make. Sombra can’t hold off forever, he’s not incurruptible. If the alt princesses are too weak-willed, then they will give in again. My guess here they are trying to figure out how to weaken the evil or seal it away for a while. It took Nightmare Moon a year to get back to full strength and possess Rarity.

It was the same for Sunset as it was for Luna. The Rainbow Blast didn’t change her personality, it simply undid her transformation. Sunset was defeated, but her free will wasn’t affected. Why do you think Twilight was still lecturing Sunset after she lost her power? It’s because Twilight knows very well that the Elements doesn’t work that way.

Sunset Shimmer never thought of herself as a monster, but after seeing herself become exactly that, she finally realized where her misdeeds had led her. It had become all too clear that everything she had thought was true about power and merit and ambition was a lie, and that is what really changed her.

@Trickquestion
No. Remember, Luna became Nightmare Moon because of her own jealousy. The envy she allowed into her heart, combined with alicorn magic and perhaps her connection to the Elements, incited the transformation. The transformation did not make her evil, that part was her fault alone. All the Elements did was revert Luna’s form. She still had to make the decision at the end to turn away from her former misdeeds. The Elements aren’t capable of changing a person’s heart by force.

“Glimmer of good”? This reminds me of how dumb that story arc was. It takes the notions of good and evil, which are by definition based on a acts of will, and trivializes them by making them into some nonsensical voodoo that can be added or removed from a person by going through certain steps. Ridiculous.
