@DrCoolcabbage
Do you mean the staff in the background? cause the light seems to be coming from the left instead, what with the shadows on twi facing it and all
magic isn’t ever really in front of an object, a couple of examples; >>548900 >>327998
basically magic creates an aura around an object, and maybe a tint to it
also notice how magicking objects makes them light up, as in become a source of light in all directions, and the surroundings as well
yeah the scene looks like late evening at least
now wether they go with an old timey candle or a more modern lamp,, specially if its a lava lamp, ’s up to you
The purple light is a staff leaning against the wall, as I rather like giving my unicorns staffs. Probably a strong displacement map could fix Twilight’s horn. It might still look kind of painted on, but it would have some real texture.
That’s a really good point with the magic lighting. Right now it’s just sort of…there. Although I’m curious by what you mean by the pants being lit up. Could you explain that one for me?
You know, a few lamps would really add to this scene, both in lighting and aesthetics. I was trying to have some sunlight comig in from the windows right above the current scene, but I think the UberEnviroment light is drowning them out. So, work with what you’ve got right?
Oh God, her eyes are rose, aren’t they? I’m kind of embarrassed I missed that this whole time. Also confused.
And yes, I read that whole post in Fluttershy’s voice. It was glorious.
@DrCoolcabbage
Well, the only noticeable things (fluttershy-style nitpicking i mean) now are either fault of the models themselves (dash’s eyelashes are still away from her eyelids, her eyes are rose not purple, her mane has a little too much red on the back when usually its divided in two trios, and discord’s pupils are supposed to be different sizes, the swirls on twilight’s horn are not only obviously painted on but have obvious stitch lines) or a little on lighting (the wand on the back is still a little too bright and distracting, both that and discord’s portal seem like they should be emitting a lot more light on the environment than they actually are, and in fact most of the ambient light should come from the portal and magic, which by the way is a little too a ball, some aura-kind or glow would work better, on that note magic should glow a little more and the entirety of the pants should be lit up, what the fuck even is that purple light to the side, and how were they pleasantly reading with that little light,)
you could replace the bottle on the table with a candle/lamp
I must confess there’s not much I can do to the models themselves, save for changing/removing rotation and morph limits, and that can only go so far. Changing properly would (to my knowledge) require re-rigging them models entirely, which I mist confess is rather above my pay-grade. Also tried changing the lighting a bit. It got rid of some of the more obnoxious “micro shadows” in some of the clothing and limb spots, but could still be better.
And Dash no longer has the face of a clown-rapist or a pose that would make a yoga instructor flinch.
Any further suggestions? This is wonderfully refreshing.
@DrCoolcabbage
well my knowledge is a might limited since my experience has been working with brawlbox and a some time with 3dsmax
a short term solution would basically be cheating the models by moving joints individually, hiding problematic parts behind stuff, etc
that being said if i had to look for long term solutions, i’d either look up on lighting techniques protip ambient lighting works wonders as a cheat to smaller errors same with softened lighting, or i’d nip the problem in the bud and directly refine the model, maybe make different models for expressions and problematic poses (like turned arms) if the situation calls for them since cartoon characters don’t blend well with realistic stretching
all that being said tho, again my experience is limited and i’m used to working with limited resources in the first place, so i’m sure there’s way easier fixes than what i do
@Dig Dug
You know, since you’re one of the only people to critique my work (and thank you, by the way), what would you do differently? Clearly there’s room for improvement and you seem to have some ideas on the subject.
@Dig Dug
Ahh, all fair points. I’ll admit she was kind of thrown in as an after thought, and yeah, those arms and that face really need a do-over. I suppose she wasn’t exactly my main focus in the picture.
@DrCoolcabbage
i won’t because its subjective bitching no one wants to hear
so instead im going to bitch objectively by saying dash’s model has a lot of stretch lines, and also her eyelashes are floating like a mile out of her eye
@DrCoolcabbage
You’re welcome! But I’m not exaggerating. There’s super interesting and hot stuff going on in both pictures, and visually they are also perfect. Rare instances of 3D pony art that I find so valuable.

Alright, sounds good. Seems we have quite a few of the same tricks up our sleeve. (Also, 3DsMax? Nice!). I made a few changes based on some of the things you pointed out, plus a few things that were bugging me personally: http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/295/f/9/really_give_me_your_pants_by_tahublade7-d83ru0v.jpg

@Background Pony #B251
Aww, thanks so much! You’re both far too kind.
You could thank Lady Littlefox, since she made the bodies and ears. The rest it Kp-ShadowSquirrel’s model.
Good job whoever made them.
So, she came prepared for this?
Still, that could be arranged…
What, and risk losing her place? Absolutely not. That book’s coming with her.
