It’s MLP on vinyl. Being a small vinyl collector myself it is a treat
It is one of the few records I know to hard art on the record itself. Most records are either black or a single color (Like pure white, pink, etc.) THis is the first time I have seen a record with pictures on the record itself so that’s interesting.
Because the record is brand new, the quality is that of a very good mp3. As long as the record is cared for accordingly, the sound should remain very crisp and clear. Like no background sounds or what not. Like straight from the show. I even heard some instruments in some songs I have not heard before. For example, Like in May the Best Pet Win, there was a weird whistle sound effect somewhere in the channels that I did not hear in the show
In addition to the point stated above, some of the songs differ from their show counterparts. In The Laughter Song from Episode 2 of Season 1, Pinkie Pie’s laugh is much longer in this release compared to the show’s release. And for the Make a Wish song from the Cheese Sandwich episode, it left out the conversation bits of the song leaving an unaltered original cut which is really awesome to listen to.
The vinyl record itself is very thick. The thickest record I have handled so far. Most other records I have touched are thin and flimsy, but this record feels like it could take a little more than usual
Cons:
Price. For me, most records I buy are saved from bargain bins. Like at the library, thrift store, record stores getting rid of ‘crap’ records. Those records cost me between 15c to $1 at most. Hell, even the BIG albums filled with like 10 records cost me like $3 at thrift stores. Even then when I buy a record online (Very few) they range from $10 to $15. One MLP record cost me $28.50. So I paid a little more than what I was used to. It’s not a problem for most, but for someone like me who is used to just paying small amounts for a record it’s a bit of a shock.
The record sleeve it came in. I already expressed concern about seeing the clear plastic sleeve the records came in from the preview pictures, so when I bought mine straight from hot topic all four corners were already a little mangled because there is no way in hell that a very flimsy plastic casing like that can retain its shape. I am actually considering buying a custom cardboard album from online to replace the plastic casing.
The record I got advertized that it had two exclusive renditions of Winter Wrap Up and The Smile Song only available on this vinyl record. After giving it a few listens I couldn’t find any noticeable differences. WHile other songs sounded immensely different due to cut conversations or removal of background sounds, those two songs which were “exclusives” didn’t seem all that exclusive to me.
While it’s just me, they only included the first part of the Art of the Dress song. That bugs me so much that they always release the first part but never conjoined with the second part. Why…
TL;DR
Pros:
MLP on vinyl Record
Art is directly on the vinyl
Very crisp and fresh sounding audio
Thick record and feels very durable
Cons:
Price I am not used to
Clear plastic sleeve as opposed to cardboard album
Corners of the plastic sleeve already mangled
Exclusive renditions of two songs don’t sound that exclusive at all

With picture disks, the printed images are sandwiched in a between a protective clear plastic and the vinyl. Picture disks aren’t “really” meant for frequent/repeat listening; they’re primarily display/collector pieces.
Enlighten someone who last bought a vinyl record in… oh, let’s say, 1992. Are the images cut directly into the channels, or do they sit on top? If the previous, how do they keep from having the image wear away when the record is played over time?
Just an update to everyone who commented and will be viewing this picture after the fact. The “Exclusives” are not recordings different from the show, but exclusive to the record. There is no difference between the Princess Luna and Princess Celestia records except for 2 things: 1. the record art is different and 2. The “Exclusives” are different. Luna has “Winter Wrap Up” and “The Smile Song” while Celestia has “Apples to the Core” and “Babs Seed”. Other than that the setlists are the same, which is really cheap on them for that. So basically you’d be forking over another $30 for a different record art and two different songs. That has immediately made me rethink buying the Celestia record. I might get it but now my chances of getting it have diminished greatly.

People who know how to ship records (and I’m gonna assume that includes Hot Topic) know to put them in an appropriate mailer, also vinyl records are pretty darned tough, it’s the old school shellac ones that would shatter into a thousand tiny bits when dropped. It’s also a modern vinyl release so it’s (hopefully) 180gram which makes it even tougher than old school vinyl.
For the record, picture disc releases like this one often do come in simple plastic sleeves, because it’s assumed you want to show off the disc, rather than the album art you get with a cardboard cover.
I agree that plastic sleeve looks really flimsy and terrible. I suppose they wanted something to show off the record but come on, they could have done better. Still I’m definitely going to try to get one even though there isn’t a Hot Topic anywhere near me, nor would I care to set foot in one. I suppose these will be showing up on ebay and places but I dread trusting the mail service to not break them into a million pieces.

That’s honestly tempting. They don’t go on sale online until the 30th and I’m sweating bullets genuinely scared they will run out before I can get my order in… considering stuff like this has a tendancy to sell out super fast when bronies are involved.

WHAT? Now I have to choose between if I want Apples To The Core or The Smile Song? THAT’S NOT FAIR HASBRO. NOT FAIR AT ALL.

Fork over $30 and I’d gladly give you one!
