Well, maybe that was the case in “Dual Destinies”, but when they first cropped up in “Apollo Justice” Phoneix commented how they were cold and dark, and he wasn’t sure if he could break them even if he had evidence. So at least when “Turnabout Storm” was being made, I think that’s what they had in mind.
Trixie’s “secret” is that she’s super bitter and jealous of Twilight for receiving so much praise and adoration for performing magic, while Trixie does essentially the same thing, and just barely manages to scrape by.
The hopes for a sequel are less than slim at that point, but it really looks like the kind of thing that was meant to be answered later on. So many mysteries in that short series.
Is hinted that Trixie is jealous of Twilight having friends, maybe?
The ending in with Trixie gives a magician hat to Wright kind of make me think she saw him as a friend.
