Yep, totally a matter of perspective, and you are certainly free to prefer whatever you want. I personally miss certain things that used to be on Nick, so I understand the whole nostalgia thing. However, if you haven’t watched much Adventure Time or Steven Universe (and, more recently, Clarence), I recommend you give them another look. They really aren’t trying to just be random and weird, they are trying to tell good stories and they’re paying a lot more attention to the feelings they’re getting across, not just the jokes. The crew on AT really are like poets, and some people don’t really get their view on the world, sometimes they just are too weird.

That’s really where storytelling is trending towards anymore - deeper concepts, more ‘artsy-ness’ and less classic ‘cartooniness’. So yeah, if you liked fast-paced, cartoony, ‘classic’ shows, then you’re a bit out of luck, though I don’t think those kinds of shows will ever die out. However, I’m really, really excited for the direction certain shows are going, as a fan of cartoons, and as a storyteller myself.

And about losing quality…I wouldn’t worry too much. A can only sink so far before it bounces back. People know what they like, and what they like ends up making the network money in the long run, so even if it takes a while, quality will always shine through eventually. I personally think that’s what’s happening with CN right now, but again, matter of opinion.

“Better”is just a term of perspective. I sincerely doubt that Cartoon Network is going to regain it’s lost glory with the same generic, random humored, overused, hipster teen demographic based shows it got.I used to love Cartoon Network, they had creative diverse shows like Ed,Edd,Eddy,Billy and Mandy,Chowder, camp lazlo,My gym partners a monkey ,samurai jack…those shows to me seemed more creative and funny than the weirdly random, brightly colored,“keys jiggling of front of a child”,“action” shows on now.You could say I’m only comparing the best but I still see no value or comparison of today’s Cartoon Network to the old and feel genuinely sorry to for the kids watching crap shows on Cartoon Network and Nick.

Have you been watching CN? Have you seen some of the new stuff that’s coming out? CN is getting better, not worse, whereas networks like Nickelodeon are falling behind.

The glory days of Cartoon Network are over.Shows like Adventure time and Gumball may keep them afloat for a couple more years but if some serious reform of their lineup doesn’t happen I wouldn’t be Surprised if by 2016 they become just another crappy “kids” channel showing generic live action sitcoms or cheap, animated, immature, excuses for cartoons.

I wouldn’t write it off completely. I don’t think that romance as a whole has much of a place in this show, but I do think it’s becoming more and more possible that it’ll be possible for a ‘gay’ pairing to happen in a cartoon. In fact, I think Cartoon Network is getting very, VERY close to finally breaking down that barrier. Whether or not that means anything for Pony at all, it will be a glorious day when that finally happens.

Why the fuck do people care whether the ship is realistic in the show’s canon?
No FxF ship will ever be show canon, and you can be damn certain that if sexuality was to be addressed, each main character would be straight.
Shipping is fun. Of course they’d never be a couple in the show, it doesn’t mean we still won’t write fics and draw pictures about them.
And it’s also fun to identify couple-esque moments in the show, it doesn’t mean anyone actually thinks they’re a canon couple.
Just let people ship whoever and whatever the fuck they want.

Yeah, no you don’t care, get it right.

Also use terms properly, Headcanon is for something that’s not actually explained or known and thus left to a individual to theorize on, as already noted in such cases I’ll grant that any view is defensible even if I think some are improbably represented. That’s not what’s at issue here however. No, the issue is when something is known and a writer just decides to arbitrarily alter it for some reason. That’s not headcanon, that’s a straight up retcon. There is a significant and critical difference between having a certain opinion regarding something that’s not known and outright altering something that is.

I tend to think of fanfic writing as similar to writing in a long running franchises, and indeed one could perhaps call many franchises EUs “professional fanfics”. They take a given setting, some of it’s characters, and try to tell a new and interesting story within it. Within that context when an author merely expands on some previously unknown point in greater detail it tends to be most often welcomed. However when an author more or less tries to overwrite or contradict previous work it’s often seen as suspect and much a harder sell unless it’s done exceptionally better then the older material on the matter.

That’s how I tend to view fanfic and that’s also the lenses I tend to filter my criticism through for any story that doesn’t outright state it’s a huge AU (I have other issues with those, mostly of the ‘if you’re changing everything about the setting and character why the hell even bother?’ sort). Within that framework then keeping the character reasonably in-tune with previous portrayals (canon) is important, and when I see immediate massive deviation like sudden changes in rather well established sexuality I’m immediately suspicious and the burden on the writer to REALLY sell this increased massively, few can.

Mind you I don’t troll them or such useless shit, I mostly avoid them unless they get allot of positive word of mouth. That doesn’t mean I can’t however comment on what I see as the absurdity of the sub-genre or provide reasons people would dislike it beyond the nonsensical and knee jerk “they’re just homophobic”.

It’s fiction, people have different headcanons, deal with it.

I can accept it in cases where it truly is ambiguous, but I’m speaking specifically about Rarity here mostly since she’s the point of discussion. Her attraction to males is blindingly obvious and has indeed been a plot point multiple times now.

To continue to try and argue she could be a lesbian or attempt to fitfully play the Bi card despite a total lack of similar actions toward females is delusion. There simply isn’t any ambiguity to hide behind and that’s the kind of shipping I can’t stand. Too me it’s on the same tier as people that decide to make some character they don’t like for some reason a total psycho or jerkass or whatever in defiance of their actual depiction.

Having said that I still think people tend to take “ambiguous” too far in many cases with Homosexuality being almost the assumed default despite all evidence and simply sanity (species where homosexuality was actually the norm would likely go extinct,)There is also an eye rolling trend to where if one character is depicted as gay suddenly ALL of them are, there are way too many fics where all the main six suddenly just decide to bang each other for instance.

I’m just thinking out loud here, but can you imagine if the show had a canonically gay character, and certain shippers changed the character’s sexuality to straight so their ship worked? Or claimed the gay character was actually bisexual in order to heterosexually ship them? Well everyone would go crazy. There would be allegations of homophobia thrown at those shippers.

…I’ve seen SOME lesbian shipping fanfics done well… It’s just that most of the time, they… aren’t.

At least in most cases, half the mane cast really HAVEN’T shown any romantic interest at all, so interpreting a character as gay wouldn’t be COMPLETELY invalid. What I can’t stand, though, is when people pair off Shining Armor with other stallions, or any mare other than Cadance. ESPECIALLY when they rewrite the events of “A Canterlot Wedding” to do so. Yes, I have seen s*** like that. One story I came across that did that was actually the first story that ever got a dislike from me on Fimfiction.
Tk3997

@misnamed
Yes because the only reason to dislike people totally rewriting a characters canon personality as very blatantly shown in a given work into something it patently isn’t to suit there own often hackney narratives is homophobia, that’s the only possible reason.

Not that fanfiction is inherently a balancing act between doing something new while keeping the character recognizable, not that such wild swings in established characters are often the hallmark of someone that cares little for the actual material and treats it like crap, not that most of them have almost nothing to offer in terms of narrative or creativity beyond “OMFG LESBIANS/GAYS”.

Nope none of that, no, if you dislike forced, canon breaking gay shipping you must be a homophobia. It’s the only logical explanation.
