Yeah, when they first popped up, people derided them as characters that just took away attention from the main cast.
Now look at today, they’re some of the most well liked characters in the sohw.
What? There’ve been two winters. And don’t go starting with something ridiculous like blending episodes from multiple seasons accross. That’s just silly. Season 2 introduced the “all the mane 6 can write letters to Celestia continuity” therefore it’s impossible for season 2 episodes to take place during season 1. You also have other bits of continuity, like Rainbow Dash reading from Read it and weep onwards, for example.
People thought that way?
I remember how it was cool to hate Rainbow Dash, because she was a brash jerk.
Having got into the show after Season 1 aired, I was surprised to hear how they were probably the first “character drama”.
I can’t quite picture the show without them now.

Still calling bullshit on that only one year thing. Way too much has happened to condense it all easily into one simple year.
Fiction cartoon time is a crazy beast.
If we go with the theory that only one year has passed, then it’s possible that for a while, Luna really was timid and scared of everyone. Who knows what spending alone in the moon for 1000 years does to your sanity? She has started to appear only “lately”, because she’s slowly regaining her confidence and sanity.
I think they meant a big role. What was stopping the team from at least adding her to RoH with Celestia? Or at least have a small appearance somewhere in Season 1 just letting viewers know she’s at least alive.
I recall something along the lines of Hasbro thinking that little girls wouldn’t be interested in a dark-colored pony who ruled the night.
Oh, Hasbro. You’re had no idea!
Well all we had to go on was less than a minute of screentime of her. Can’t really blame them.
Was it really too much to at least have her say hello or have a little appearance in Best Night Ever or Return of Harmony?

I remember the fanfics where Luna was almost Fluttershy-like. Timid and quiet.
The days when canon didn’t yet clash with fanon.
The days when we thought Luna had been dead or something due to no appearances until Luna Eclipsed.
