No, the g1-g4 terms are based on the toy design than the cartoon series; the original cartoon series, MLP and Friends, and MLP Tales were all released during the original G1 toy line, that kinda tells you how long Hasbro stuck to the original generation series.
Remembered this because of a heated comment argument about Toy Generations and Cartoon Series back on Ponibooru, it all got explained back there.
