There is much, much more to Jade than just her crush on Spike. In fact, for the longest time she isn’t even in love with him. What sets Jade apart from the other characters is, that her actions do not only have consequences, but these consequences are a permanent thing she has to deal with in her every day life. Jade is essentially a good baby dragon; she just makes one big mistake. She and Spike have some character traits in common. They are both level-headed and often the voice of reason, but at the same time they can be immature and quite selfish at times. Although she is calm and doesn’t jump to conclusions easily, Jade is the type of character that wants everybody to agree with her. At the same time she does realize when she’s wrong most of the time. She just hates to admit it.  
So having to own up to her mistakes like this is quite painful for her. When she does accept that she can’t undo what has been done and has nobody to blame but herself, she stops whining and starts making the best of the situation, showing actual interest in her new environment. As it turns out, dragons don’t know all that much about ponies either, which makes her adorably naive sometimes.  
Another semi-big issue is prejudice. Spike’s scornful attitude towards dragons is Jade’s pet peeve. At the same time she often generalizes ponies.
 
Jade doesn’t think of Spike as anything more than a friend, until Mrs. Cake makes the assumption the two are dating. At the time Jade dismisses the notion as silly and continues to be Spike’s playmate as if nothing happened. However, as time progresses Jade starts to see certain things Spike does* as advances, even though he’s only being nice. (*why else would he willingly share his gems, for instance?) She weighs her options and decides to tell Spike she’s willing to give him a chance. But right when she is about to do that, she sees how he acts around Rarity. Jade is confused about the ‘mixed signals’ at first, but quickly figures out what is really going on. To her surprise it makes her feel a bit disappointed. Jade develops a crush on Spike after this and keeps it hidden fairly well. She gets along with Rarity and doesn’t want to ruin her friendship with Spike, so she just hopes he’ll grow out of his infatuation with the unicorn on his own.
 
Jade is for all intents and purposes a sidekick. Her role is less big than Spike’s. She is essentially his playmate and they even each other out pretty well when they are both ‘on screen’.

Well said and reasonable as far as Canon x OC shipping goes. After all, if it’s just adding a something that would be neat for story telling rather than wish fulfillment then there is no harm done and can even be make for some character exploration.

People don’t like having OCs shipped with canon characters, because it is almost always poorly done. In fact, I cannot think of one decent OC love interest. This is a shame, because we all know it doesn’t take a professional to have or even convey good ideas. What many fan artists and authors don’t seem to understand is that there is a credibility issue to tackle, which becomes harder to deal with as the series goes on. The more episodes there are, the less likely people will buy a new character just appearing and sweeping one of the main protagonists off their feet. We’re 65 episodes in and the series has barely even touched on romance.  
I am not even going to try, since that wasn’t my intention to begin with. As it stands the chemistry between Rarity, Spike and Jade still works. Again, this is because I didn’t just try to shoehorn in a love interest, but because the whole Spike-has-a-one-sided-crush-on-Rarity thing needs more dynamic and Jade’s character provides this dynamic. At least, that’s what I’m hoping it is.

I can see your point. Plus I don’t think many people like having OCs shipped with canon characters, though I think Spike is quite the exception. I have my own opinion about where I think things may go, but we can only wait and see.

It’s not just a matter of stepping on toes, although it is a big part of it.  
I introduced Jade as a character first, a potential love interest second. Another reason why I don’t resolve the matter is, because it is more fun for my watchers if I don’t fill in all the blanks.  
Lastly, I have no idea what the show’s canon is going to do. In the unlikely event that Spike gets a girlfriend or something else will radically change that completely makes Spade utterly impossible, my story would be even more screwed if I actually made the two a couple.  
The show’s current canon allows this awkward love triangle, that I only added in for the dynamic, but there is no evidence that it’ll stay this way.

I don’t actually ship the two. I am leaving it up to the viewer to decide whether or not they eventually become a couple.

I may love Spike but when it comes to matters of love, I always root for the girl.
