It could be odd in the Big Easy (and everywhere else, really). Go and read the book Gumbo Ya-Ya for much more on New Orleans in from 1850-1930; among other things it tells you how in the city’s Irish ghetto, the ‘Irish Channel’, black beat cops were put on patrol because the city’s leadership knew it would pi$$ off the Irish no end. That and the blacks were liked better than the Irish.

Kinda depended on where you were. New Orleans had an actually fairly diverse population (which included plenty of mixed-race people of various social classes), which loosened things up a bit in parts of the city.  
Still, Tiana’s mom was still a servant. The LaBouffs were just nice people.
