Background Pony #3D24
@Phil Srobeighn
Fanmade pony cards have attempted to address their creature types in several different ways, though never in a way that was entirely satisfactory or elegant. Often the creature types “pony” and “alicorn” would be invented, but I always thought that exclusively using the pre-existing types of Horse, Pegasus, and Unicorn was the best way to go. But at the time, that had its own problems.
In the years since most of those were made, though, the “batching” mechanic was invented. It allowed one to take several unrelated game components and refer to them all at once with a single word. The two primary examples:
Historic (Legendaries, Arifacts, Sagas)
Modifications (equipment, auras, counters)
Recently it occurred to me, this was the perfect solution for pony creature types. While they’re clearly divided into three distinct types, you’d definitely also want to refer to all of them collectively, and batching them all as equines makes that super easy.
For alicorns, it makes the most sense for them to just have all three creature types rather than be their own unique type. That way, they benefit from everything that benefits any of the pony types. As such, “Alicorn” is a type-defining ability in much the same way as the existing Changeling ability, but only granting the Unicorn, Pegasus, and Horse types.
