Would be nice to know the details. But I think I’ve already provided a long-winded possible theory on the gap between g4 and g5. I can copy it here if you don’t wanna peruse the forums.
Also, now that you mention it. Those new dragons might actually be from g4 as babies. I mean Spike in g5 looks slightly older than them and he was still a winged kid back in g4 when the new hatchings came.

I mean, the show says that Twilight made the crystals to keep the magic from being stolen by Opaline, whereas in the comics she created them to stop a race war, that hasn’t even really been confirmed if it happened in the show canon. As far as I’ve watched—so like, as far as the first episode of Chapter 6—they still haven’t explained why everypony separated.

I see it as both happening. I won’t hesitate to explain why.
I feel like the actual reason we don’t see the rest of the Mane 6 is that whole ‘Hasbro is making a reboot-sequel to something they don’t own’ debacle. And it doesn’t seem like the comics are canon. Their backstory on the crystals is way different to that of the show’s.
How did the new dragons get what appears to be a cutie mark though?
I…..never thought about that. He knows and remembers Twilight but we see none of his other friends. But then the comics claimed she visited them while Fluttershy was still alive so….

As far as I remember he only bailed on being dragon lord because he saw Ember as more equipped for it and he wanted to stay in Ponyville with The Mane 6. But he did legitimately participate in the Gauntlet of Fire to keep Garble from winning and destroying Equestria, as he said he wanted to. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Spike became dragonlord once The Dragon Lands needed a leader and once he had to distance himself from Twilight…and possibly the Mane 6?? Assuming they really died earlier before Opaline came to steal magic from Equestria.
My headcanon is because Spike helped influence dragons to embrace friendship over greed, they became less scary as a result.
