Disagree. He was completely selfish in his actions and driven by fulfilling his own desires no matter how much he hurt others. He cared only for himself and what he wanted. He enjoyed seeing others suffer for the sake of seeing them suffer.
Even when Fluttershy tried to befriend him, he took advantage of her kindness to get his own way. You could say his actions were a result of his loneliness, but at the end of the day, his selfishness was his defining trait. Selfishness is the root of evil.

Meh, you were better as a villain. You weren’t even the BEST villain, honestly.
He was NEVER a villain. Even if he was antagonistic towards the ponies, he was not evil.
