And I can understand that carpal tunnel can make things like writing difficult, but writing the letter “u” surely isn’t much to ask. Especially as nobody’s asking you to in the first place!

ya see, there’s your problem. you’re trying to use british english, which is far less efficient than american english by having a larger amount of multiple meanings for words spelled and pronounced the same, as well as having a larger propensity for extraneous and/or silent letters.
 
pretty much anything with a long O sound is spelled as “ou” over there. for example: color is colour. it takes up more space, and as someone with carpal tunnel I can tell you it adds far more time onto anything that requires writing. I blame the french influence on the language and culture. they’re the ones that practically invented superfluous silent letters, and they definitely “perfected” their art.
