I love that both pics for Winter Wrap-Up are of Twilight’s butt.

If this re-watch series goes through the entire show, I fully expect more art of Pinkie hugging Applejack’s butt once we hit Shadow Play.

And also Starlight is awful as both a protag and antag. Boring, uneventful villain turned poorly redeemed sob story plot device character who’s forced into episodes she’s not needed in for sympathy points because the writers want so badly for people who actually like good writing to like her xd

Twilight Sparkle with Lauren Faust: Astronomer, scientist, and librarian. Girls don’t have to be Disney Princesses to be successful.

Twilight Sparkle without Lauren Faust: Disney Princess immediately!

You know why Disney Princesses suck so much? Let me tell you why. It’s because being a princess is a bunch of nonsense, and historically, the value of their life was dictated by their desirability to make suitors.

All it took was Lauren Faust leaving for Twilight to go from being a scientist and librarian to being a politician and walking set of genitalia. Think about how messed up that is for a minute.

Twilight Sparkle and crew should have gone on adventures. She should never have gotten wings, or a castle, or a map table that arbitrarily divided the Mane 6 up into two-mare teams,

The map, although contrived and reliant on Twilicorn & her new castle, is what allowed for a new type of episode. The two-mare teams allowed the writers the option to explore character interactions that are implausible in solo shows and ensemble episodes. Whether or not they were successful at using that opportunity is somepony else’s argument, but it did present them with a much-needed storytelling mechanic (even if the call to action for those episodes is contrived).

or a school that none of them should even have the free time to run, considering they already all had full-time jobs by that point.

I totally agree about the school. Twilight and Starlight are the two ponies who had any justification for being there more than once a quarter as a distinguished guest lecturer.

By the time Season 6 and 7 rolled around, they’d written themselves completely into a corner, and Starlight and the Young Six were substituting adventurers that took on the role that the Mane 6 was supposed to have.

They could’ve salvaged things if they weren’t so attached to forcing the M6 to be the main cast. Students were their biggest missed opportunity: do you think they’d still have their reputation of having no real personality if they were given solo and paired episodes? For that matter, why not make an episode where a student and M6 member are paired?

@Tepass
Seasons 1 and 2 are the best for sure. Season 3 fell apart because the two most important people abruptly left (Faust and Renzetti) combined with the rising trend of more serious episodes, especially openers and finales. The cobbled-together and thereafter-frequently-changing writing teams of S4+ were simply not able to implement good drama and a consistent “world” very well while also keeping the original values of the show.

As I’ve said many times on Reddit, the writers leaned hard into world-building in seasons 7 & 8 and somehow managed to make Equestria feel smaller than in the Faust seasons. Instead of introducing us to some town we’ve never seen before, it felt like the adventures were to set pieces that only exist while the M6 was visiting them.
In regards to the openers & finales being more serious, the S4 finale is one of my personal low points of the show. The song where Twilight admits that she doesn’t have any more idea than the writers about what to do with her new princess powers was on point but then they blow it all on a bigger & badder magic laser battle that bronies seemingly ate up unquestionably (it’s a fan favorite precisely because it is so devoid of nuance, I presume)

Season 6 is a massive relief, especially if you’ve cooled down and purified all your hatred for Starlight so you can accept how much better she is as a protag instead of an antag.

This ought to be the motto for watching FiM: if you can’t appreciate future good storytelling because it relies on a total arse-pull from a previous episode, don’t watch any MLP at all. Other terrible introductions that did have payoff if you were willing to pretend they were introduced well: Cadence & Shining Armor (folks forget this one), Twilicorn, and the map table (just barely and the rest of the castle is still gaudy) for starters.

Season 9 has a couple lighthearted episodes that would have fit perfectly into S1 or S2 and is basically the third-best season if you completely excise the finale.

Many of the complaints I’ve read on S9 are that it completely forgets that seasons 4–8 happened with the exception that the character models introduced in those seasons still exist. Those lighthearted episodes fit so well into the first two seasons that they make the final season take a sudden reversal of direction without enough headroom to develop the payoff (because there just weren’t enough episodes left).

My speculation is that the decision to wind down FiM was made after S8’s premise was finalized and episodes were deep in pre-production and so they couldn’t scrap the school in favor of properly winding down all the other stories.
