…This is almost like why all the countries of our world ask everyone to learn English as requisite to travel around the world.
It stands to reason. I mean, every time we’ve seen the yaks hanging out with ponies, they’ve mostly been speaking broken Ponish. I guess Rutherford and a few others studied their language for the sake of communication, but the others stay quiet because they don’t know any Ponish at all.
@Dustcan
I think the closest we got to that were the breezies, given that they’ve got their own language and only Seabreeze knows how to speak Ponish.
The closest we got is Zecora. And that was just ponies getting plussed by her speech patterns rather than language (even though she apparently does speak a different language).
It’s a shame the show never actually had a language barrier episode. That would have been a great opportunity for a real-world lesson.
I think it’s reasonable to conclude that each species has its own language and it’s normally used when dealing with their own kind.
Best Gift Ever and probably Not Asking for Trouble, too.
@PonyPon
It must be called Yakyak.
I mean, is there ever a case in the show when yaks are talking amongst themselves without any ponies present, outside of flashbacks conveyed to a pony audience? I don’t think they’ve had a reason/opportunity to bust out another language yet.
Thinking back, I think that the only group who spoke a different language were the breezies – everyone else just uses the same universal tongue, which is still called Ponish for some reason.
Don’t forget the dragons whom until recently Ponies knew almost nothing about speaking their language. Even ancient dragons like Dragon Lord Torch somehow still knew their modern language despite being around since ancient Ponish.
On the one hand, it would make sense for there to be.
On the other, the show has always had it that everyone in the world speaks the exact same language – even people like the yaks and kirin, who were isolated from all outside contact for centuries, speak the same language ponies do.
