The Air Nomads had no desire to Industrialize and the Water Tribes couldn’t mine metals at the poles.
 
Equestria would have it even easier. With its large size, it must have deposits of something besides gems, and between the pegasus and unicorns they could probably control air, water and fire. The biggest roadblocks are culture, earth ponies and maybe Princess Celestia.
 
Oh and the show’s iron clad status quo.

@Trickquestion: When you think about it, steam powered engire worked with fire that make water boil that create air pressure that make a turbine rotate. So air nomad or water tribe would have been as likely to make a machine work by pushing air or water into the turbine. fire have a little advantage of forging iron easily with their power.

That was a Fire Nation tank from Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Fire Nation was the only country that had Industrial machines in the first series, and that seems like the cliche technology=evil thing, but it makes insane amounts of sense when you think about it.
 
They don’t need oil or coal for power, becuase they have Firebending, so they Industrialized first. Their need for metal drove the foundation of foreign colonies that were the seeds of the war.
 
Equestria would be the first industrialized nation of its world based on the same principle. No other race we have seen can use magic, so unicorn and pegasus magic would sidestep the need to discover and develop industrial technology.

G1 had an interesting kind of energy. It was like the GM saw his group drive up for a session, realized that they had nothing planned, and just started bullshitting desperately. Logic and continuity were way down, but fun was way up.
 
A lot of eighties cartoons had that feel to them. Just improvise, improvise, OHGODDONTLOOKBACKDONTTHINKABOUT, keep rolling. Assuming that they can keep it up, it can be pretty damn entertaining.
