“rather” is an understatement.
It reads like something I would of written when I was a teenager I mean its not vomit inducing terrible but it could sure use a few edits and maybe calming down a little on some plot and character details.
In the right story a black talking horse with a purple mane and an orange talking horse with a billion eyes can work (thinking of Lovecraft here) but those are a very particular sub-set of “weird-tales” something like this story requires a bit more subtlety.
I mean you can use colour to express a character in much more nuanced way then just making them black.
Purple wouldn’t be a bad choice due to its associations with eldritch magic but Twilight has kind of type-cast that colour a bit so I would stay away from it.
For this character I think Green with silver hair would be more striking but still give a hint of sinister motivations underneath.

No, it’s quite serious, but the artist is one of those that gets rather…edgy. The sequel to this prolog actually has a pony with uncontrollable eyes all over his body.
