O.o yer thinking way too deep into a meme pic. there is no shipping in mlp or eqg and never will be. i like Sunset/sci-twi too but it isnt ever happening. there are no characters with any sexuality other than straight in those worlds.

I am bored here’s an actual analysis into this ships popularity, for posperity’s sake.
 
 
Foils  
=  
The primary reason they are seen as potential love interests is Foils.
 
They are what is known as a literary foil, simultaneously being the same but different. This is easily seen in how they approach the idea of magic in LoE, Sunset is ecstatic, Twilight is terrified 2 opposite reactions to the same entity.
 
Similarly how they approach the scientific method comes from 2 schools of thought; theory & practice. Again showing a similarity in their interests while showcasing their differences.
 
There are numerous other examples of these contrasting traits among their characters but I’d rather move on.
 
Best Friends  
 
The second reason sounds like a real dumb reason but: Best Friends.
 
Most examples of REAL-LIFE successful long term sexual-romantic relationships will often describe their significant other as their “best friend”, so that’s a thing.
 
The base attributes of a successful long term relationship involve: Sexual attraction, sense of humour, shared common interests, friendship. The only trait that can even be debated out of these traits is the ‘sexual attraction’.
 
 
Conclusion  

Based on the above traits it can be clearly seen why the ship is popular the characters were designed to be foils to eachother while also being best friends. These traits coincide in such a way to form an optimal long-term relationship with only sexual attraction acting as a barrier to entry (and this is the MLP fandom so we know that’s rarely an issue).

Replicating
=  
If you wish to replicate this effect it’s not too difficult the hardest part is designing the 2 characters around eachother to hold contradictory but similar traits. It worked for Sunset & Scitwi better than it did with PT because SciTwi was built around being a foil to Sunset while PT was not, Sunset was always Twilight’s foil which reduced difficulty in the design.
