I never stated anywhere the term was recent. Only that 4channers were the first to use it to describe other 4channers (friend or foe/good or bad) and themselves (they will openly refer to themselves as ponyfag, oldfag, newfag, faggot, etc)(ex: OP’s a faggot - for some troll post or OP’s a cool faggot like Freddy Mercury - if they made a good post). That goes beyond the typical usage, which is typically reserved exclusively for someone you dislike and you want to insult.

The term wasn’t even invented in the last century. It’s an old term that has…sorta changed meaning over the decades. Used to mean a bundle of wood or kindling, but is now commonly used as a derogatory term for a homosexual, often times a male. 4chan uses it as a general term for people because…well, it’s 4chan and 4chan is the scumhole of the internet.
 
Of note, Wikitionary has it listed as a term for a rude and/or inconsiderate person – likely because of the South Park Episode – as well as a shrewish woman in the UK.
