What the Fluff?
You’d be surprised at the origins of a LOT of holidays!

The Catholic church co-opted two pagan celebrations, one for the winter solstice and one for fertility and celebration of new life, to create Christmas and Easter. For Christmas, the description as written in the bible contradicts the season being winter, but the Catholic church made the date “official”, and Christians have followed it since. And there’s evidence they did the same for Easter.

They did it to try to ease pagans into switching religions. “Oh, you have a winter solstice and a spring celebration? Well, we have celebrations then, too!” It was one of many things they tried to get pagans to convert.

You’d be surprised at the origins of a LOT of holidays! Though for the life of me, I STILL can’t figure out why we haven’t made Octoberfest into an official, national holiday (or week, like Thanksgiving). I mean, c’mon! An entire WEEK dedicated to drinking beer and eating sausages, as well as something for all the German-Americans (like myself) to celebrate about our ancestral culture? What’s not to love!?

Ember “…F yay K YEAH THERE’S ROOM FOR MORE!”
