Pony #933C here. I’m not out to rustle anyone’s jimmies. The MLP first weekend BO seemed to be fighting a retreating battle to get the box office take it needed. There’s some kind of threshold that the studios won’t admit to until after the fact. It’s good that the movie made the numbers it needed to. I freely admit that other people had better sources of information about that than me. There’s been movies that made twice their budget back (or something), and were declared failures anyway. I hope there’s a sequel.

Its worldwide gross is a little over $50,000,000USD; for most animated movies, that would be a disappointing total, and possibly outright disastrous. (Disney/Pixar and Illumination are used to making twice that much on just the opening weekend in just the United States.) However, although Hasbro is successfully guarding the budget figures for the movie, the best guesses by those in or close to the animation industry put the budget somewhere in the $10,000,000USD range; if that figure is even remotely close to the true budget, then MLP:TM made tens of millions of dollars in profit.

But, again, its real measure of success will be toy sales.

I hope you are joking, and if not I hope you can back that claim about a slow box office. It was always more than 50% sold at all showings which usually ran from 9 - 9 pm from opening till when Thor was released before it was then taken off the nights for a 9 - 5pm showing. It lasted 1 day after COCO was released and had a total time of well over a month and a half and still saw strong audiences in a 78 capacity room. It was anything but slow. What has been slow was Blade Runner, The Foreigner, Subricon, Jiggsaw and The Snowman. With in the first 2 Weeks, The Foreigner, Subricon and The Snowman was canceled. With in a week and a Half Blade Runner was removed for Thor and the extra rooms was dedicated to that with 3 rooms each being 150 capacity was for Standard and 3, 75 capacity rooms was put to 3D. Thor killed off many movies but for the children, the only other movie at the times was Lego Ninjago and that had highly mixed results from children and adults. MLP out sold Ninjago, even for boys surprisingly. Mostly families went to see the MLP movie and I have seen young adults and teens in for the movie, usually in the mornings and weekends.

When coco came out it Killed MLP and Ninjago as we now have COCO, The Star and Wonder being the go to “Children’s” films. Oh and I can back everything I just stated.

@Background Pony #DD1E A theatrical sequel might be better. I’m trying to write some ideas myself, WITHOUT EVER calling them fanfictions and make them so that they wouldn’t be those, or SEEN as those. Also, there might be OTHER ways for Hasbro to have the money to make a sequel. Spend the money they’ve earned on toys and episodes on it.

Is Chevistian upset that MLP:TM isn’t getting award-season recognition, or mocking the movie as not deserving of such?

@Cyborg_pony
Not that they ever did, except as a form of publicity.

@Background Pony #933C
It’s almost certainly turned a tidy profit at the box office; the real question is how the toys are selling.

I thought that the film still made it’s money back though?

The film has been predicted to have cost between 5-8 million ( http://www.cartoonbrew.com/box-office-report/little-pony-movie-opens-4th-despicable-passes-zootopia-global-box-office-153918.html ) and while the box office’s initially WAS slow it has domestically made around 21 million in America, while worldwide it’s made about 51 Million ( http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=mylittlepony2017.htm )

At the very least the film broke even with box office. Even then, it’s possible to recoup the remainder through DVD/blu-ray sales.

Could it have done better? Oh undoubtedly, but if everything did work out as predicted the film has made money back and it’s possible for sequels to be made.

Granted, if production costs WERE far bigger than sources are predicting (over 50 Million) we may have a problem with green-lighting sequels…

It does matter if the film doesn’t get awards. No proof of excellence, means no approval of sequels. Especially after the slow box-office take at the theaters.
