Some say the same about Sunset. In fact, Sunset used to get as much hate & controversy as Starlight did, until “Rainbow Rocks” woobie-fied her.

The point is, like I said, Sunset (or her popularity) had nothing to do with Starlight’s reforming nor the way it was handled. So the claim that they wanted to “shoe horn another Sunset for MLP” is nothing more than a rumor.
And Starlight having “no personality” is 100% debatable.
Who said anything about season 5? Season 5 Starlight was great. Its season 6 that sucked. Its like her personality got bleached. Just cause she was reformed doesn’t mean her personality had to be lobotomized. I don’t really care which script was finished chronologically behind the scenes and I certainly don’t care about Sunset. All I know is Sunset first made her debut in EqG BEFORE Starlight did in MLP. Anything before post could have been easily retconed and if it was the other way around, people would be criticizing Sunset.
Oh for the love of fucking God, would you people STOP MAKING THAT ACCUSATION?! If you guys actually do some damn research instead of making crap up just because it sounds right, you’d know that the script of season 5 was finished before Rainbow Rocks released. So no. Sunset had nothing to do with Starlight’s creation OR redemption arc. So quit saying that!
Also, everyone talks about how “bad” Starlight’s backstory is. But no one says anything about Sunset’s, despite the fact that it’s even worse and gives her even less of an excuse to do what she did.
I actually love it when someone challenges my point of view. One of two things happen. They’re either grasping for straws made of thin air or they have I point and I learn something new or forgot about something.
Starlight’s back story with Sunburst was bad because it lacks detail. Or was intentionally made that way to be mysterious like Spike’s origin or AJ’s parents before Perfect Pair. They wanted to shoe horn another Sunset for MLP but did it halfheartedly. They could’ve made it work if they just invested more time into exposition OR not try to make another Sunset.
First thing that always comes to mind is why didn’t they write to each other? Did she write, he didn’t reply? Did he try to reply but couldn’t do so? Who the hell knows? For all we know their village could be in another dimension and going to Canterlot requires a portal that only opens if you have dimensional scissors.
It’s that mere fact alone is why I occasionally ask myself:

There is literally no way to say “I disagree with you” in text on the internet without sounding hostile or condescending. It’s a flaw of the medium. Because of this, debating on the internet is pointless, because people’s targeting systems register each other as enemies, and be honest, are you really willing to fairly consider your enemy’s point of view, or do you just want to prove them wrong? Wouldn’t that feel good?
Either way, no matter which side you’re on, you always lose, because the other person is staunchly unwilling to consider your point of view. This is why I don’t do it, I back out of debates immediately, and I am unsubscribed from all image comments/forum posts by default. :/

Ugh. Whatever man. I don’t feel like arguing about this right now. All I can say is just because you don’t see the logistics behind it, doesn’t mean there’s no logic in it whatsoever. All this doesn’t even matter anymore. It’s in the past.
That wasn’t condenscending, just stating a fact.
Some of what you said is just headcanon territory, we don’t really know what the parents’ situation is. So we can’t build off of that. Aside that, it is very hard to believe she would go to the levels of apeshit she went with your reasoning. She was young yes, but she grew up, learned more lessons and became smarter. It’s also very weird there were no teachers for example, seeing her behaviour and helping her. (This is kinda pointless point though since I can already poke a few holes in it, but still.)
If she still had fears and anxiety when older that’s fine, but going to the lengths she did, makes no sense. She would be a bitter person shutting herself in at worst.

Look, she outright said she was afraid the same thing would happen if she made another friend. And let’s say her anxiety made it hard to make friends in the first place. She finally made one, one that she spent all her time with. Then, quite out of nowhere, left and never came back right in front of her. That’s harsh. And her young mind thought he didn’t care about her if something as simple as a cutie mark was enough to abandon her right on the spot. And it stuck with her and made said anxiety worse. It’s not that she couldn’t. It’s that she wouldn’t because she was a scared little child, and no one soothed her fears. Luna wasn’t around, and due to her turning out the way she did, I’d say she has a questionable upbringing. Either that or no one could help her at the time.
Yeah i did, no need to get condescending. Maybe that’s true if she was still young, even though it’s a very long stretch. But that mare grew up, and with enough time she could’ve easily done it, no excuse. And even with her so called “anxiety”, she still made atleast one friend. So that she couldn’t make a new one or talk to him due to anxiety is just plain incorrect.

Well maybe it’s because her mind works differently because of her anxiety and the fact that she was a freaking small child, thus seemingly simple things are actually difficult for her. Ever think of that?
That doesn’t make much sense in the context. Plus the fact that she already made a friend, so another one in 15 years wouldn’t be that hard for her..
And was it so hard to visit him or send him one letter? Apparently it was because she went apeshit over it.
Well to some, it really is hard. So you can’t really generalize.
