fat is insulating, but doesn’t generate any heat. only muscles in mammals do. but I think the smaller size of women is the biggest factor. put a cold mare in an arctic sleeping bag, with no muscles added at all, and see how long before she’s sweating. that and hormones… having a baby factory shoved in you causes lots of fluctuations, and in a contest between keeping the womb warm and the hands warm, hands lose every time.

The scientific consensus on that regard is the supremely discourteous “Women aren’t actually any colder but they feel that way because they’re fatter than men are”.
Maybe ponies are more like humans in that regard. My mother always had cold feet and my father never.
