The princess’ chest rises and falls in a deeper, more sudden fashion than is normal. She looks out her window into the distance, everything she can see painted in dark, shady colors or else bathed in the silvery glow of her moon.

“Somewhere…” she tells herself in little more than a whisper, “he’s out there somewhere doing something brave and stupid.”

Luna’s knight, her darling little protector, was away from the castle this week, for his royally appointed vacation time. Such a loyal, dedicated one, he was, that the princess literally had to force his ‘rest’ upon him. Though, she knew that where ever he was at that moment it was anything but restful.

Such a rowdy man, always picking fights with the solar guard, or the locals, or the wildlife, even a dragon once. Holding a hand to cover her mouth as she giggles at the memory, the princess recounts having to talk both him and the dragon down from killing one another. Not that there was any doubt her knight couldn’t take the challenge of course.

In fact so devoted was her loyal knight that he had dedicated himself to her; matching his sleeping schedule to be wake an hour before and sleep an hour after his mistress, standing guard in the court in full armor every single night, unmoving and uncomplaining, even during the sticky, hot summer months, even to the point he would gleefully put himself at her beck and call, cater to her fanciest whim.

And he is very different from the other knights, Luna thinks to herself. He’s the only one that seems to live his life as a lunar knight, rather than simply accept it as mere occupation. But mostly he was the only one the princess had grown particularly fond of.

Maybe that was because he was fond of her in very much the same way, and even just that though is enough to make Luna feel warm and happy. She wanted to be with her favorite knight more than anything in the world. More than the world itself - Tia took care of it well enough anyway.

That is all robbed from her, rent away as her face falls and she turns away from the window, unable to bear the view any longer. Heading to bed, the princess reminds herself that a relationship with her knight was nothing more than romantic fantasy, such could be found in a novel.

Luna approaches the bed, trying not to tear up as her future husband rolls over and makes room for her to lay with him under the comforters.

The truth was, Luna sent her knight away not on vacation, but to spare him the wedding a while longer. Of course word would reach him, but she still felt the need to stall.

She crawls into the bed, damning political marriages as the princes strong arms encircle her. She closes her eyes as the tears flow, settling in, and hoping that she could at least fantasize anew of her knight holding her like that, cradling her to sleep. And until the morning…she can.
