It’s disgraceful what jerks the Wonderbolts were to Rainbow Dash in that episode, and in several others. I mean, they could have just told her that everyone has their nicknames, and that it wasn’t anything personal, but they didn’t, and instead just made it seem like they were bullying her, which frankly, they were. And seriously, she’s the best flyer they’ve ever had, and they’re so happy she’s finally joining them, and they just treat her like crap! This is why I hate the Wonderbolts in several episodes. That and the way they treated Soarin in Rainbow Falls, Lightning Dust in Wonderbolts Academy and Rainbow Dash in Rarity Investigates.

Magical Inkwell - Wrote MLP fanfiction consisting of at least around 1.5k words, and has a verified link to the platform of their choice

I don’t think “ribbing can be good natured” is that negative of a message. I thought the episode was good and had a good moral point, and illustrated the Wonderbolts as real ponies with an insular and protective structure. Dash was learning to fit in by realizing she didn’t need to be coddled by her heroes anymore: she fits in because her talent and effort mean she belongs in the uniform.
 
I’d even go so far as to say it was a necessary transition. Dash had been idolizing the Wonderbolts so much that she didn’t see them as real ponies, even when she became a member. She was showing off out of insecurity because she didn’t realize she already belonged.

I agree. The episode seemingly portrays the Wonderbolts as childish bullies and abusive to Dash but once you step back objectively you can see that it’s Dash’s past emotional baggage that is projecting that onto them.
If the Wonderbolts had accommodated her then they’d be doing a disservice and she’d go on feeling inadequate and never accepting her flaws.
The subject of people allowing their past to colour others is one that doesn’t get dealt with much even in adult media. My favourite example of this is the Stephen King short story “Sometimes They Come Back” which is about a Highschool Teacher who finds his delinquent students are being replaced by the teen greasers who murdered his little brother 30 years ago.
