Uh… you mean the rebellion was good or the thing they were rebelling against was good? ‘Cause you’re either taking the side of the Confederaceh or the Galactic Empire, and I’m not sure either position is particularly defensible.

Er, what? I never said that… I was simply stating that both were rebelling against something that, in the long run, was actually good. The South rebelled against the North, and the Rebel Alliance rebelled against the Empire.

I feel people in this day and age really don’t understand the South, what they stood for.. Yes, slavery is wrong, but that’s not all they stood for… They stood for being rebels. So, in essence, The Alliance Against The Empire/ Rebel Alliance from Star Wars are based off of them. Great picture, btw.

Do we need the separate “confederate flag” and “rebel flag” tags? Aren’t they the same thing?
I find it interesting that people’s passion about something is often inversely proportional to their knowledge of the subject, as is the case with the sudden moral outrage over this old piece of cloth in seemingly entirety of the US.
Well, “interesting” isn’t quite the right word… “Disheartening” and “Unsurprising”, perhaps…
The same way people manage to form violent opinions over the latest publicized shooting or presidential candidate or scientific issue or some other media fluff despite only having learned about them a day earlier.

The Confederate Navy Jack (commonly referred to as just the Confederate flag) is a symbol of slavery, of a nation that built itself on the very ideals of white superiority and black inferiority. It is a racist symbol no matter what people think or try to defend or try to justify. Thus, celebrating it celebrates racism.
Incidentally, not that it’s really that relevant, but both sides of my family fought for the Confederacy. I myself was born in Georgia. And I hate the Confederate flag for what it symbolizes.

Were. However, things done changed. would they even consider nominate a “black” (i, personally, think that Obama is more mulatto than black.) person as their candidate for presidency if they were?

The South will back whoever represents their static values, and now, this title falls to the Republican Party.

OH MY GOD JUST SHUT UP ABOUT WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Almost every flag has multiple meanings.

Just because it’d a Confederate flag DOESN’T mean it’s racist.

The flag meaning racism is just a coincidence in this case, as the person who owns the OC isn’t racist.

You’re indoctrinated if you think the rebel flag has anything to do with slavery. It was designed for the Army of Northern Virginia because the Confederacy’s flag looked too similar to the union flag on the battlefield, it flew over no slave ships and few plantations.
Later on, the flag definitely got usurped by some pretty notorious groups (although, so did the union flag, most racists hide their intentions behind a guise of patriotism, and that can’t be blamed on a piece of cloth).

It flew over armies that were trying to defend the “right” to own other human beings, a “right” that nobody has ever actually had. It was then raised a century AFTER the American Civil War by a state to protest attempts to make sure black people had the same rights as white people, firmly establishing the Confederate Navy Jack as a symbol of oppression. It’s a racist symbol, it should have the racist tag.

Except for it wasn’t their property. Ultimately it belongs to the US. … No state can legally leave the Union.
I don’t know how you hold this idea. Nowhere do i see an opponent of secession citing any governing document or contract that gives the Union ownership of a state, pre 1860s. The Constitution gives the Federal government only specific powers, none of which allow it to suppress a seceding state. What’s more, the 10th amendment states “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” So where in the Constitution are States prohibited from leaving the Union?
… they tried several methods and legislation to ease tension between sides. So no, the south would have not gone peacefully.
Yet they did go peacefully. Way to blame the victim.

It was not rebellion by this point; it was doing what was within their right to do with their own property.

Were the early states under contract to be in perpetual union?

Well, yeah. No state can legally leave the Union.
Even if you disagree with me, is the solution to secession to go and burn down the cities of the defectors?

As before, they tried several methods and legislation to ease tension between sides. So no, the south would have not gone peacefully.

@O’Shaunal
The union tried very hard to prevent a rebellion. Did you just forget all the pre-war legislation specifically designed to compromise the interests of the north and south?
Background Pony #586D
If the Union wants to keep its members, maybe they should—i dunno—maintain a quality, mutually beneficial relationship with them?

They probably tried to do that, but, at some point, the interests of the North and of the South became too conflicting for such a thing to happen.

And the Union also had the right to assert its authority. not acting would pave the way for other states starting to think they could secede with no consequences too in the future.
You make the Union sound like a psycho, controlling boyfriend. Please inform me where they derive this authority from. If the Union wants to keep its members, maybe they should—i dunno—maintain a quality, mutually beneficial relationship with them? Are lines on a map more important than people’s lives to you?
