I am quite satisfied with the amount of art that features Soigne Folio, especially considering her extreme obscurity among the massive list of characters that is the dramatis personae of the MLP:FIM series. She is connected with the much more popular Photo Finish, and so I am happy with any piece in which she is included, even if she is only a small part of a large group scene. Also, if you look at each of Photo Finish’s subordinates (Elsie, High Style, Powder Rouge, Pretty Vision, Roxie, and Stella), Soigne Folio is in third place in terms of associated pieces, with only High Style and Powder Rouge having more. If one looks at Finish’s non-stylist subordinates, Folio is in 1st place, with Stella close behind, and Elsie and Pretty Vision in a distant 3rd and 4th place.

As for my own contribution to Soigne Folio’s non-canonical existence, I have my own fictional accounting of her life and times, but have not submitted it for public critique. The gist is that she is romantically involved with one of my original characters and friends with another. Folio is a member of the Equestrian fashion industry, which I have interpreted as being an order of magnitude more cutthroat than its modern human society equivalent. While not particularly bright, Folio is not as vapid or catty as her status as a successful model would imply. She spends much of her free time supporting the arts and volunteering at Sun Spot High School (my name for Canterlot’s most poorly funded public high school). I think my commentary on the racist anti-earth pony policies of the unicorn aristocracy (whose hegemony is cemented with a longstanding alliance with the unicorn new money families) and Soigne Folio dealing with them on a regular basis would be poorly received by some, and is one of my reasons for keeping my own fiction to myself.

I would contend that the greatest strength of an obscure or forgotten character, especially one with no spoken dialogue or relationships with the actual important characters is that one has great latitude to create personality, relationships, and personal experiences for that character without disrupting the narrative of the work in which they originally appeared. My story about Soigne Folio enriches her character without offending the sensibilities of other fans who have given much thought to the personalities of more important characters, and that suits me just fine.

Thank you for providing me with an opportunity to talk about one of my favorite minor characters Sir/Dame.
