Hmmm, yeah good points. I’ll have to incorporate these into the working of the “Where Magical Power Comes From” page. I think for now I can say that all of the known occurrences of magic being used without a CM in the show should work in a system I’m presenting, under the idea of how magic could be generated. I’ll go into detail later on in the page I’m absolutely set on making now.

Ok, we have little to no comparison for the multiple forms of magic Starlight Glimmer used but if that’s weakened… Just how overpowered is she for a unicorn? She was far better at magic than unicorn Twilight. Her cutie mark is a good question but are any of them well defined? It’s possible for Trixie’s cutie mark to be for all magic or just a talent for stage magicianry. It could be the first, the second, or both. Cutie marks are just too open to interpretation that you can make them mean so many things.
 
 

 
But is it unusual? Sweetie attempted magic a few times before her cutie mark, even successfully levitating a broom in Twilight Time. Twilight had several failed attempts to hatch Spike before her burst of magic and gaining her cutie mark. Sunburst and Starlight used magic before their marks. I’m not one of the people that pour over every bit of the background action but I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more examples I missed.

They’re not limited, just weakened in comparison to the things that correspond with their special talent. The wording wasn’t clear, and that was slightly on purpose to make it sound stuffy and “official” like a textbook, but what I meant was the Cutie Mark filters magic, but it doesn’t block out other forms of magic entirely.
 
As for cases like the Cake Twins or Princess Flurry Heart, I do say that it’s usually the case that self-generating magic is unlikely, but not always. Since I’ve convinced myself to continue this, I’m planning on making a page about the Aether/magic itself and how it’s generated, and how some creatures including ponies have the means to make their own.  
And as for Starlight, it hasn’t entirely been explained what her Cutie Mark means. At first people figured it had to do with taking other’s Cutie Marks away, but it’s clear now that that was just a spell she had perfected, like the time spell. My headcanon is that it’s similar to Twilight’s in a way, some version of having a talent for all magic itself, which, like Twilight, would make her a very powerful pony - especially under what I’ve written here.

This is entirely sensible and masterfully done.

Wait, we’ve seen unicorns without cutie marks use magic.
 

 
So, except for moving objects unicorns are limited to magic associated to their cutie mark? But… Starlight Glimmer, she did self levitation, firing bolts of magic, trapping Twilight, removing cutie marks. How does her cutie mark cover all that?

I’m mentally debating it. There’s a bunch more on this subject that I didn’t put in on these “pages” about things like the Tree of Harmony and the Crystal Heart, how they might work, etc. And while I’ll most likely end up making that, since this was a lot of fun to make, it also took a bunch out of me to write.
 
So… yeah, yeah there’ll probably be more sooner or later here.

Will there be more of this? I’m especially curious as to whatever else may be documented in this codex.
