“Game clones”, “spiritual successors”, etc is a thing, y’know? Concrete assets, sounds, etc is protected by copyright, but it’s not ‘ideas’. “Metroid” name itself is protected by trademark, but it’s not copyright.  
Ideas can only be patented, but it’s not copyright, and it’s severely limited by laws.

Actually, he said you can’t copyright ideas, and that’s true. (And thankfully, you can’t patent fanfics and headcanons.)
Obviously you didn’t read his post. Ideas can be Copyrighted, That’s what IPs are. Metroid is an Idea and a game. no one, other then Nintendo, Can put Metroid on another console. They can make a game LIKE metroid but they can’t actually MAKE a game like Metriod.

You can’t copyright inspiration, ideas and facts (not yet, and hopefully never).
So if they draw their own style of it, they should be free to use almost whatever they want.

My Little Pony - 1992 Edition

It wasn’t a case of “using what was left over”. Giving the CMCs shield-shaped cutie marks reminiscent of their Crusader badges was an obviously deliberate choice by the animators. It symbolizes the fact that the CMC worked together to find their cutie marks. That shared effort, and their realization at the end that the thing they had in common–helping other ponies understand their cutie marks–was more important than their individual desire for a mark, led them to receive a shared mark.

That’s probably not far off the mark, actually; if they had used a more obvious design, there’s a roughly 8000% chance that dozens of fan artists would have already gotten there before them, and that would give Hasbro’s Legal Dept. hives. Something completely new– yet still appropriate for the characters like this– was the almost inevitable outcome.

I wonder what the individual parts within the cutiemark shields mean, though. I get the music note in a star, and even the lightning bolt in a wing makes sense (gotta build up a lot of static electricity whirring around like that)…
 
…but the heart in the apple? Wasn’t Apple Bloom a bit of a building specialist?

Well, to be fair, everyone was so blinded by the scooter/singer/engineer(?) cutie marks concepts that no one stopped to think their cutie mark could be something else.  
I like to think that these are their cutie marks because the fandom took all the good choices and they had to go with a safer choice. The shields.

You mean the shield? ‘Cause yeah, it’s not really the same shape so it’d be easy to miss the connection. And it’s also understandable how different they are as the first shield was just a crudely-made patch that they threw together for themselves.
