Aaaaawwww yeah!

All the talk of ‘accomplishments’ are exactly why I dislike these tags, people seeing them as status symbols of “aww ye, something I uploaded/drew/found/farted out got upvotes galore!” or people using downvotes galore as ‘proof’ of something being bad even if it’s kjust an unpopular fetish or something. >_>;

There’s a difference between uploading an image that lots of people like, and uploading a lot of non-meme images that lots of people like.

That rule always bugged me, art cannot be given a fixed value, a meme that generates a laugh is no less art then the best of paintings, claiming they aren’t is the same as claiming that Rap isn’t or synth music isn’t it’s an arbitrary limiter put in place to preserve an artificial sense of elitism, you can judge it’s personal quality perhaps but it is the height of arrogance and out right BS to claim you can disqualify it altogether,

If that’s the case, close picture uploading by anyone who is not the creator of the image. The truth is, that the average uploader, and not the artists themselves, are what keeps this site relevant. As Thanatos Omega said, if the uploader is irrelevant, and the artist is what matters, don’t give badges to the general population.

The difference is badges are designed as accomplishments for the users, REAL PEOPLE, while tags are designed solely for search criteria.  
So using tags as something they weren’t meant for - especially when there’s already a system for searching for the exact information that an “accomplishment” tag is supposed to signify, making it redundant - is stupid.

The criteria for the badges is pretty high, especially again because of arbitrary standards not reflective of of fact, so for most users a simple tag is likely the biggest ego booster they will get, and since it doesn’t detract from anyone else’s fun, so there is no real reason other then artificial elitism to remove it,
 
as has been stated, if this is such a big deal get rid of the badges, see how the users who got them react and know that their indignation is no less justified then any user who is happy to have seen upvotes galore or wall of faves on a pic they uploaded,
 
The site more and more seems obsessed with squeezing out any form of just for fun, trading in the relaxed and free spirited nature that drew people to it in favor of a cold impersonal by the books and frankly boring place,
 
The tags hurt no one, and maybe make a person smile once in a while, this is just seeming like a mean spirited “it’s not enough that not everyone get’s to win we have to make sure the losers know they are losers” since their is no other reason to remove a harmless bit of fun,

Well they don’t really hurt anyone, but they are kind just another annoying thing that some people needs to keep in check. And why keep something that people keep needing to add/remove to follow some fuzzy/arbitrary threshold for a property that we already have search syntax to catalog by? There’s already an easier way to get exactly the same functionality.
 
I’ve also found it annoying that people sometimes just throw this tag on images they assume will get a lot of upvotes. Or they’ll forget to remove it when they copy the tags over for an edit. I kinda see it as just another little niggling thing that people can forget about/mess with, and then we wind up with mistagged images…

if the tag is as pointless as you say and not needed for searching then why remove it? all you did was point out how little the tags matter in a practical manner which isn’t my point,
 
Here is an idea, crate a new subset of tags called arbitrary, give them their own color hide them behind a click, and put all the less helpful tags into it, things like Upvotes Galore and Muffinshire is trying to murder us, there problem solved,
 
this isn’t some great enemy of the people, and dammit if some whining got Princess Twilight left in the tags then i won’t let this go, i will probably lose but, but i will be dammed if i just sit to the side while someone needlessly takes a few seconds of joy from people because of some saturday cartoon villain like hatred of other’s joy,

Because its another thing that people are going to need to dedicate time to adding/removing in order to keep up with the image’s score. It’s also another thing that people can intentionally or otherwise incorrectly add to the tags.
 
If we already have a means to get more accurate results (search score comparisons are instant/always up to date, unlike tags that need to be added/removed), then why leave up other tags that people have to patrol/that can be incorrectly added?

Hmmmmmm I don’t remember saying it was pointless.
 
I honestly think people will think too highly of these tags due to their impressive sounding names like “Upvotes Galore” or “Wall of Faves”. I mean, I remember when I first saw those tags, the artist in me absolutely wanted to get them on my works. And the part of me that was here to browse images was tempted to add them to my watch list, or maybe create a filter that excluded everything else so that, from time to time, I could just peruse the “best of the best”. People who see these tags will usually think they beget some “standard” or threshold for good posts, which absolutely misleading if we just let people add them whilly nilly.
 
Although if we are allowed to say the tag is pointless, then there are reasons to remove it. Tags that aren’t used just sit on the server and take up space. That’s time/electricity/money/computation resource that we could be spending on site upgrades. Or we could just not spend it at all, and allow the server to work just that little bit faster/more cheaply.

all “Upgrade” or “Maintenance” means to me anymore is down time followed by bugs and no other changes, i’m sure that someone notices something but that’s what it’s felt like ever since the forums replies started breaking,
 
All of this feels like the industrialization of the site, Mods who care more about not getting reports then solving problems, more and more gaps between the average user and a small group of insiders, it’s unsettling and starting to sound more and more like what i imagine happened when DC launched the new 52, where people got so caught up in their own deal that they spat on the readers,

But that’s more work the Devs would need to dedicate to dealing with these tags. As I understand it, they’d rather just be done with this whole issue than have to create a more complex method to deal with it.

Well, there’s a whole slew of TODO items they’ve got listed. I imagine some of those features could be pretty nice. I know there are other ideas that have been thrown around (like having notifications for “@your_own_username” responses in comments be shown to be more important than other comments). I would love it if that got implemented.

I really can’t speak to that point. Ever since I learned it takes ~$400 a month to run this site, I just assumed that the owners would run it with an eye for efficiency. If this means they think its worth it to purge unnecessary tags, then I can’t really fault them for wanting to reduce costs or free up resources… But I think you’re seeing something that I’m not so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

The main point of removing tags like this is to attempt to consistently enforce tagging standards which itself has the point of keeping tags uncluttered and thus making them more user-friendly; every “button” filled with words to act on only makes the tag area harder to use, so we should only have more on an image if those tags actually can be used for anything.  
Metadata stuff is a prime example because it doesn’t need to clutter the tag area at all to be used in searching, and it’s more useful as search syntax to boot.
 
Relatedly, tags like “the implications are horrible” are nondescriptive and add a bunch of words to the tag list without real benefit. Things like “implied genocide” are a lot more specific and useful, justifying the extra words.

and just for the sake of argument, wouldn’t that small sense of achievement be self-evident in and of itself? It’s not like someone has stolen your uploads in any way, the tags are just useless in and of themselves.

Our assistants, moderators and staff give their time freely, for some reason. The costs are all hardware, bandwidth and support services (FUN FACT: Derpi serves about 70 terabytes of images a month). Tags don’t have any appreciable impact on the cost of the site. However, resolving disputes on tagging, ensuring consistent application and so on, that all adds time and effort, and so removes time/effort from other areas of the site’s care and maintenance.

All of this still feels more like a shut out the masses for the chosen elite, and a effort at some kind of obsession with order over the simple fun and joy of people, again like a holiday special villain who hates yuletide holidays because the check out counter they work get’s super busy on account of gifts,

The exact same thing could be said of badges or any name plate that doesn’t belong to a member with banning powers, they exist because people respond well to positive reinforcement(And to give leverage on Pikapete),

I once again offer the simple solution, make any tag that isn’t considered actually good or necessary a different color maybe hide them from view on the image by default and have a little thing pop up when you scroll over it that says “don’t bother mods over this unless it actually breaks the site rules, this tag is a joke or ambiguous so we don’t care,”

How is a something that’s listed in the search help guide more elitist than having to already know about a tag with a name as obtuse as “upvotes galore”?
