Maybe their love-devouring form makes them more powerful than their changed form, but at the cost of never being satiated. It’s akin to accepting profane power at the cost of your soul, common to a lot of mythological and fantasy works, and it’s probably how Chrysalis got into power. It would be interesting to see some recidivism among changelings, especially since a lot of them seem to be ashamed of and inclined to move away from their dark past; I can see some changelings fear the hive becoming an Equestrian vassal state and that they were destroying their own heritage and customs in favor of adopting pony culture and customs, so they go back to what they know best. The best comparison I can make to changelings and changedlings is the Dark Eldar and Eldar respectively from Warhammer 40k: Some wish to move past their past that almost resulted in their extinction while others embrace their past, which granted them immense power.

Well, maybe we will have an answer to this question if in the series finale Chrysalis will try to regain control of the hive.

Personally, I wonder if there really is a way for the Changelings for become creatures devouring of love again. Not because I want it to happen. I simply think they should show this possibility because in this way it would make their kind more complete and show us that they are good because they want to be like this, and not because they cannot back to being evil.
