That second idea seems really convincing to me. Headcanon accepted.
First, Starswirl’s a Time Lord, and his hat is his TARDIS.
Second, there was once a dynasty of wizards with the same name who didn’t tell Celestia that they were a different Starswirl because she seemed so happy to see “him” alive. The final Starswirl in the cycle died out sometime after banishing the Dazzlings with only a daughter to his name. Twilight is the final product of that bloodline.

could simply be between younger starswhirl and older starswhirl. maybe he lost most of his beard in a fight or something.
