I’ll admit, I only read the transcript and thought that Starlight ripped up the script and not slowly ripping it.
That, and I’m pretty sure there’s a pony mending spell somewhere.
It is an easy detail to miss, so I don’t really blame you there.
… Huh. I guess I’ll call it a touche here.

Huge difference. She was close, but she never actually did it, and it was clear at this point she was having second thoughts, but needed to truly be convinced of her mistakes.

Twilight showed her the future of a ruined Equestria laid in waste.
They returned to the moment of the Rainboom, they talked and Starlight realized her mistakes.
She didn’t do another attempt at ruining the future with the new knowledge.
She thought Twilight was lying to get her to stop.
Yeah, but once she saw it, did she stop? Nope. Just went back in time to fuck it up all over again.

If there were only one timeline, the multiple Twilights and Starlights gathering around the rainboom would have started to pile up. Instead we only ever saw one of each at a time, and Starlight’s previous attempts were never undone. (Plus, as we saw in Friendship Games, the prime timeline never ceased to exist while all this was going on.)
Here’s my variant. I think I’ve got it out of my system now.
