(I’ll keep it vague for those who haven’t read)  
Well, that’s sort of true. While she is for the most part “occupied”, she can still get around for the most part, but chooses to stay out out of a sense of moral obligation.
 
As for how this, specifically, this could happen; either a gender-bender spell, or Xenith had a hand in it (if you go off the info in the epilogue)
