I like this idea, to be honest; Twilight is nopony’s first pick for her job, although she’s so good at improvising that things tend to work out anyways. (Still, remember the look Princess Celestia gave her with the yak situation?)
 
Princess Celestia makes a lot of strange decisions with Twilight, but that’s because she let her previous student down. She saw what Sunset Shimmer was capable of, but she went too slow and played it too safe, and Sunset ran out of patience and went rogue. So now she’s giving Twilight Sparkle everything that Sunset Shimmer would have wanted. But Twilight’s a very different pony, and so this isn’t going as well as it could…

Just a little something from my head. Maybe the hippogriffs made a deal with some other creatures for the pearl but ended up welching on their side of the bargain.

I want you to get a better attitude, but I guess none of us is getting satisfaction.

Maybe she should have Twilight do some community service.
