It kinda makes more sense, if she actually did stop the Rainbow all the villains that were stopped wouldn’t have been stopped, and I think that might be a tad too big for the writers to be able to manage.
 
I don’t know if all of them would be free or causing havoc but Nightmare Moon, Discord, Chrysalis, Sombra, the Plunder Seeds and Tirek could end up roaming free. Equestria would be a battleground at that point.
 
I think in a way the title references how they have to set right what Starlight’s drying to “unmark”, so fixing what she’s trying to change is them “remarking” everything.
 
Plus she’s more of an antagonist in the episode this way, if she succeeded it would kinda feel like there wasn’t an antagonist at all.

Keeping time travel rules consistent with “It’s About Time” and the comics? Imagine that. (And it explains why, despite everything else, we didn’t see any temporal shenanigans in Friendship Games, which is implied to be concurrent with the finale.)

So she has only attempts to change the past and the mane6 are preventing them so she can’t change anything all along?
