Slight goof by the artist. Celestia’s mane was always pink, it wasn’t rainbow-like until after Luna became Nightmare Moon.

My theory. They choose to stay princesses because they don’t believe they are responsible with that much power and so they keep each other in check.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

I like to think the only reason the Princesses still call themselves Princesses is in honor of their ascended parents. They are far beyond this earthly realm but this is still their realm.
