Exactly. On the flip side, Sunset can’t open the portal on her own, and even if she could, she might be afraid to return to Equestria (and those fears might not be entirely irrational, either). They’re practically close enough to touch each other much of the time, but their circumstances would often make it a struggle just to even stay in touch, especially for Twilight.
The irony is, they’re not even that far apart. After Rainbow Rocks, it’s a shorter trip from Twilight’s castle to Canterlot High than to any of her Ponyville friends’ houses. But because of those friends and her obligations as a princess, Twilight simply doesn’t have the time to visit the other world with any regularity.
That’s the pathos of this ship… They literally can’t be together. Twilight can’t stay in the human world because Equestria needs her, and Sunset seems to be avoiding the possibility of returning to Equestria for reasons that aren’t hard to guess. This leaves them only with the all-too-brief moments when Twilight is needed in Sunset’s world, and separated by the long stretches of time between her visits.
“I have to go now. My planet needs me.”
Note: Twilight Sparkle turned into a pony on the way back to her home planet.
The most heartbreaking joke ever told on Derpibooru, folks.
