But they’re still just color edits. The people making them aren’t deleting the original images, they aren’t lashing out against the creators of the original images, they’re just making color edits. I’m certain that in most cases the motivation behind changing the skin tone stems from the issue that @Background Pony #1AB6 is talking about. These artists aren’t drawing ethnic characters, they’re drawing Caucasians and giving them a different skin tone as an afterthought for the sake of creating a false sense of diversity. They do this because then instead of saying “Hey, here’s a cool picture I drew.” they get to say “Hey, here’s a cool picture I drew, and look! She’s black so I’m clearly less racist than people who draw predominantly white characters!”
Sadly this does tend to gain them more attention and respect, since the people appreciating the picture get to say “Wow, that’s a good picture and because I think so I’m totally not racist like the guy that doesn’t like it.”
Sorry but most of the racial “diverse” pictures are often a fucking afterthought. If you want to draw a black Twilight or whatever I have nothing against it, but goddammit give them the right facial structure. Not just draw a white person and colour them black just to appear “correct”. Thats why a majority of these pics look so damn shitty.
Issues like “whitewashing” are heavily related to the broad social context in which they occur. Taken on its own, something like reimagining a dark-skinned character as a light-skinned character seems harmless; however, if light-skinned characters are a noticeable majority, and many such reimaginings occur regardless, then…
The term “whitewashing” bears some rather heavy racial implications, yet none of the problems you’ve listed have anything to do with race. Had this occurred in reverse, with her skin being edited to look darker, would you have been as offended? Would you have called it “Blackwashing?”
Calling others over the internet losers. Major kek mate. Calm your fucking tits and grow up.
It’s a badly-done color edit, and the animation is somehow worse too. I wouldn’t have cared if it hadn’t been so obvious. And that the uploader (an anon, of course) refused to credit the original artist or admit this is an edit.
By the way, nice ad hominem against me there, saying I can’t think for myself… loser.
lol
@HighGuy
Right on
And in other circles, ones inhabited by rational adults that are capable of thinking for themselves, we call this a color edit.
In some circles, we call this Whitewashing.
