To be fair, extraordinary circumstances often drag people together temporarily. An external observer might remark as you do, and in time the people dragged together might agree (with more perturbation, decidedly). From such an angle it seems reasonable to me, because humans are very silly creatures; and we frame these emotional interactions from this, our only, emotional reference.
