it really didn’t. it rendered itself unfit for the EqG continuity with its inconsistencies.

I think one the best reasons not to view the comics is canon is we can easily pretend this story never happened.

Well where you see a brainwash, I see a character who went from a one dimensional villain to a three dimensional protagonist. So agree to disagree?

actually, to be fair, I was ambivalent about Sunset around the time I read those blogs.
 
I wasn’t really keen on EqG until I watched Rainbow Rocks (the first EqG movie I watched) – by then, I had fallen in love with Sunset (and The Dazzlings). I watched the other two movies and all three specials – I found her amazing for most of Friendship Games, but I was bothered by how big of an asshole she was towards Sci-Twi, but I let that slide by; in Legend of Everfree, I thought she was the was the best character in the Friendship Is Magic universe and the one thing that no other being was: a goddess; I didn’t really see anything special about “Dance Magic” or “Movie Magic”, but seeing her becoming friends with Starlight (another character I love) “Mirror Magic” was the selling point of those specials for me… I couldn’t stop thinking about them being together! (you wanna know what killed the third special for me? Juniper Montage! >:U) and then I watched Equestria Girls (the first movie) so I could know how she came to be and better understand her backstory, as I only heard about how bad it was before… so I watched it to see if the fans were in the right about it. once I did, I was fucking devastated! the first movie wasn’t as bad as fans said it was – it was far much worse than they claimed! the whole story and premise was ludicrous, asinine, and stupid… but Sunset – as the unrepentant, sadistic Alpha Bitch she was presented as – tore my heart apart! I was hoping for some flashbacks showing how she turned out that way and some scenes that would portray her more sympathetically, but there was none of that. she wasn’t the tragic, comprehensible villainess I was expecting, no; she was a goddamned high school stereotype – her personality is just as fast as Flash’s, for crying out loud! she doesn’t even come off as likable as any of the other FIM villains. when it came to her reformation, I was petrified – I practically half-died on the inside! FUCK! I did not think that the writers would actually have her brainwashed! no, no, no, no, no, no!! that is not how reformations work! you don’t have the good gals mind-wipe their foes just for the sake of having a reformed villain! if that was the case, then what would be of the development the villain would otherwise have? NOTHING! …and once it was all over, I couldn’t get myself to see Sunset the same way I once did.
 
and then I realized Sunset Shimmer is not the best pony I once thought she was; she’s the worst character in the FIM universe. worse than Spoiled Rich, worse than Svengallop, worse than Suri Polomare, worse than Gilda, worse than Babs Seed, and just as bad as Juniper Montage. she is literally the worst aspect of EqG! I had to come to grips with reality and accept this ugly truth.
 
for a while, I’ve been lurking around on the Internet to see if there was anyone who felt the same way I did, and to my surprise, there were. turns out more fans feel that way than I had initially anticipated (though they’re still the minority). I came across their blogs and forum threads and comments regarding Sunset… and they opened my mind. I did not become influenced by the posts, they only reinforced my thoughts… I started seeing things I hadn’t seen before or that I wasn’t paying attention to before. I’d like to post some of the links here so you can see for yourselves and know what I am talking about, but that’s for another day.

I’d like to love her as she is now, but the disasterbacle that is EqG 1 just really ruins her for me; it’s impossible for me to accept her for who she is when I know how she came to be. maybe there should be a website dedicated to destroying every copy of EqG 1, as was the case for Shaq Fu.

that’s weird – I haven’t seen anything in EqG 1 that suggests that Shimmer was not a sadist. one, she says she could act and speak to anyone however she wanted; she cared not for the feelings of her peers. two, she feels no remorse for her actions whatsoever, and we’re talking about before her lobotomy-induced “reformation”; not once do we see her feeling guilty for every bad thing she does. three, she just walks around with a huge grin on her face; she carries out her malice with pride. four, she only feigns having standards so as to give off a false sense of civility. so no, you’re wrong; she was evil… just for fun.

well what about all the horrible things Shimmer did without feeling a single iota of guilt? she was let off the hook for that; the only things she was punished for were destroying the school’s façade, mind-controlling the whole school, and trying to kill Twilight. I think she deserved a lot more than repairing the school. methinks everyone forgives Shimmer, and only Shimmer, way too easily, every other character be damned!

this is why I cannot take any adoration Shimmer receives seriously – every fan of hers seems to whitewash over her old personality and her past actions, like it never even happened. even worse is the fact no one see her reformation for what it really is: brainwashing! I strongly dislike the direction we’ve been taking. everyone claims that she is the most realistic and multi-dimensional character in the entire My Little Pony franchise when it isn’t so; she just went from two-dimensional Alpha Bitch to one-dimensional Woobie in a matter of seconds. and her redemption arc consists of nothing but moping, crying, and brooding – that’s not a redemption! where are the amends she has yet to make with her victims? it seems that making amends no longer holds water in this fandom; we only care about the characters acting cute and gaining sympathy from us. what happened here? I am worried about how we now see the concept forgiveness and reconciliation now that we have been exposed to all this mockery.
 
I don’t understand, what happened to us? we once had high expectations for Friendship Is Magic – or any kids show for that matter – and it all seemed to vanish once Equestria Girls came into the picture. we have become so sterilized by this fantastical piece of high school fluff that we’ve lost sight of what made Friendship Is Magic great in the first place. don’t get me wrong, I like you all – I am just frustrated and disappointed. I am not not angry or trying to be mean-spirited; I just want someone to understand where I’m coming from and see things objectively rather than be led by their own emotions.

I find that very disturbing. no one questioning why her personality was retconned in the worst manner possible. there was no excuse for DHX to slip up in their storytelling and to resort to fan pandering in favor of character development and world building. worse is that they took Shimmer and turned her from plot device (as she was in EqG 1) into an audience surrogate (in EqG 2 and from there on)!

The CMC may have apologized, but nobody else did. The Human 5 reconciling with Sunset should have been the big moment and it wasn’t even there. It was like they were all just refusing to acknowledge it or something.

Considering that the Humane 5 disown her too, I think it’s fair to say that everyone else in the comic is out of character just so things can suck for Sunset.
