200+ at best? Sure, in the sense that Hasbro sells $1,000,000+ worth of toys at best each year. I don’t have enough interest in the matter to try to count them all, but I’m certain there’s well more than 200 bodies in that penultimate panel, and that’s doubtlessly less than half of the total number in the attack force. Definitely more than enough to wipe out Ponyville.

Really, if it weren’t for someone earlier saying that Beavernator wanted this comic to explore grey vs. grey morality, I’d be certain he was illustrating a story about the ends justifying the means.

Oh hey! Yet another mary sue vs. changelings! What is this, the 90283th time this cliche was used? Creativity is thrown out the window nowadays.

the comics
I don’t read ‘em, for the most part. Too much alternative canon.

I have a few ideas for Sombra’s true identity myself. It’s a story that could be very interesting, with a little effort.

>This is also a possibility, but again, we are unfortunately not given any glimpse of a pro-Sombra military or guard.
Actually, according to the comics, he did (I believe it was a FF issue with Shining and Twilight). Whether those were mind-controlled ponies, slaves who willingly joined him for a better station, or artificial constructs is up for debate.

I also have a whole headcanon regarding Sombra, about how he’s essentially the soul of a long-fallen Unicorn general from a more violent era who sees the ideals of Friendship and Harmony as lies standing in the way of the truth that a Pony is only truly alive through conquest and war, but that’s neither here or there.

>stopped working with time
Unlikely, since the whole kingdom was in a state of suspended animation.

>disarmed by Cadence and Shining Armor
It’s certainly possible, but since we don’t see it happen, it’s not something we can assign to Sombra.

>sentries and guards
This is also a possibility, but again, we are unfortunately not given any glimpse of a pro-Sombra military or guard. It would’ve been a more interesting story if we had though, if you ask me.

>maybe he could detect whenever somepony who wasn’t a slave entered the empire and thus, allowed him to locate them and deal with the problem personally.
From everything that happened, this seems like Sombra’s true modus operandi. If so, it was rather audacious of him to think that he could indefinitely enslave a nation all on his own. If he lost largely because he had no allies or truly effective safeguards, then he evidently had hubris enough to think that he was personally all the military strength he’d ever need.

It’d be nice if we knew more about Sombra’s motivations in all this, but unfortunately, we were given squat to work with. But, I digress. At the end of the day, I think it’s safe to say that he too was handicapped by arrogance.

Escapee from Alcatraz
@Millennial Dan
Perhaps that was the exact point. The traps weren’t there to stop any infiltrators or usurpers from far away, but rather, a weakened slave trying to play hero.

I assume that he had either other counter-measures that were dismantled after he was first banished, disarmed by Cadence and Shining armor, simply stopped working with time, or he just had sentries and guards to spot anypony not wearing chains. Or maybe he could detect whenever somepony who wasn’t a slave entered the empire and thus, allowed him to locate them and deal with the problem personally.

Most, or possibly all. Maybe the crystal pegasi are some kind of converts.

So sure, his security was “good enough” for the crystal ponies, but add some unicorns to the opposition and he goes down quicker than a one-legged kangaroo rollerskating on ice.
