The ambiance, the solitude, and the jump-scare.
Well, as I previously mentioned… even in the game they aren’t really scary. A bit unsettling, yes… but that’s really par for the course with cheap animatronics. The horror of the game comes more for the situation your placed in.
Eh this style works for me.
Render them for realism, however, and the nightmare begins!!
It’s rather curious, because ponies are the same way. I mean really; who in their right mind would try to render the ponies for realism? The closest we’ve gotten to that is SFM, and, well, that’s just Team Fortress 2 graphics.

Yes, I have. And they do seem to be genuinely horrifying.
But… in this image, they are depicted with their appearances from the first game… where they really weren’t all that scary looking. A bit unsettling, yes… but no more than any other cheap animatronic mascot made in the early 90’s.
Have you seen how they look in the sequel?
