They can’t tell, actually; they just know which other ponies they’ve mated with. So mares will usually try to mate with every other stallion in the herd, so none of them are sure the foal isn’t his. If she doesn’t manage this, she’ll kill the foal herself before it’s born, in order to not waste resources on a doomed foal.
