That IS how it started. Ignore the non-channer, they don’t know what they’re talking about. ZERG RUSH KEKEKEKEK is where kek originated, more specifically as a thing you’d see on the /v/ board since it was, after all, a video game thing. It simply spread from there and cross-pollinated with a number of other gags, and ‘top kek’ happens to be a common favorite.

It is in that fandom, but, sadly, no…the dumber one is the truth for this particular expression.
Is that where it came from? I thought it was from Starcraft (apparently, the Korean onomatopoeia for laughing is “kekekekek”)
The act of laughing -> “Laughing out loud!” -> LOL -> Top Gun + Lol -> Lel -> Kek -> Top Kek
