Also, in the original Dreamcast version, for some reason during the Sky Chase minigames, Sonic has a “Classic” model ripped straight from Sonic R. The Gamecube and later releases use the same Sonic model from the rest of the game.

No, the Sonic Adventure 1 models are updated a little in the Gamecube version. They’re a little bit bigger, for one thing, and they have individual fingers now (though the Brainscratch playthrough of the Dreamcast version notes that the separated fingers in the Gamecube version actually look WORSE). They’re also much shinier.

…Actually, I should be more specific. The CHARACTER models are updated (meaning the six playable ones, Eggman, Chaos is updated a little though not by much, Tikal, and Pachacamac), but the enemy models and models for all the random humans are not.

Also, another bit where the PSN version kind of fails: in earlier versions, the ice door and passage leading to Ice Cap were clear white, like ice should be. In the PSN version, it’s a bright blue, which just looks ugly. And the ice in the actual Ice Cap level ISN’T updated like that, so I have no idea what happened there.

Huh, I didn’t know that. Would be nice if somebody uploaded the original scenes on Youtube, or something, at least.

I thought the SA1 models were the same as the old ones in the GameCube version?
Yeah, some of the “adventure field” hub areas are hard to navigate when you first play the game, so the map was a nice addition. I also liked the “mission” mode, and such. (Though, a few missions were a bit ridiculously hard.) The unlockable Game Gear games were a nice addition to.

I’ll consider watching it, thanks. :)
And yeah, they just barely saved Station Square. Though, the “Sonic X” canon implied during it’s SA1 adaption episode arc that only a part of the city was “destroyed,” not the whole thing.
(But seeing how the “Sonic X” anime canon is different from the games, it’s up to the player to interpretate it however they want.)

They also changed the cutscene where Rouge was looking into the data on Project Shadow, replacing the picture of the newspaper with the Biolizard with the “Danger” warning and replacing something indicating that Master Emerald shards were on the ARK with another shot of the Hero characters, therefore rendering that cutscene and a later cutscene completely incomprehensible. Maybe they were trying to preserve the surprise, but all it did was cause the scene to not make any sense. That’s honestly the main reason why I want to see a playthrough of the Dreamcast version; to see what that cutscene is SUPPOSED to look like.

And that’s an interesting point about the Sonic Adventure 1 releases, though the Gamecube release DID update the character models and changed the lighting in a few places, and fixed some other glitches that the “International” release of the Dreamcast version didn’t address. And it also added a map, making navigating the Mystic Ruins a hell of a lot easier.

But you should definitely watch the Brainscratch Commentaries playthrough of the game. And maybe the Hellfire Comms one too, because that’s where this quote (which Brainscratch shamelessly ripped off from them TWICE; they used it again in their Generations playthrough, and they actually had the guy from Hellfire Comms who made the original quote as a guest that time, and he made note of them stealing the quote) came from:

Tails: All’s well that ends well!
FastestThingAlive (that’s the guy’s internet handle): THE CITY’S BEEN F***ING DESTROYED!

Yeah, SOAP shoes didn’t last very long. Surprised they didn’t edit those out, seeing how Nintendo edited out the “Kawasaki” ads in “Wave Race 64” when it was rereleased on Virtual Console.

I remember I mentioned I had the GameCube version to one guy, and he went all, “Oh hell no!” and went off about how much better the DreamCast version was, and such. Regardless of the “changes,” (which are actually from the original DC version of SA1, the one with “better textures,” and “fixed gliches” is the “Sonic Adventure: International” version on DreamCast. Surprised they didn’t use that version as the basis for the GameCube version, seeing how they updated the sequel SA2 on GameCube.)
Still, I enjoyed the GameCube version, so I can’t complain to much.

I hear one interesting difference is Big the Cat cameos throughout the Dreamcast version of SA2, (making him like the Sonic version of “Derpy”) but said cameos weren’t included in the GameCube version for some reason.
He was also replaced by Dark Chao in the VS mode on GameCube.
Poor Big needs more love. (Sure his fishing levels sucked, but I still like the big galoot.)

Surprisingly, no, despite the fact that the company doesn’t exist anymore. In fact, the credits are completely unaltered for both games, meaning it still has the “Sonic 10th Anniversary” logo in the SA2 credits even though we’re WAAAAY past that, and the SA1 credits still call it “Sonic Adventure DX” at the beginning whether you have the DX DLC or not.

And speaking of that, when Brainscratch Commentaries did a playthrough of Sonic Adventure, they actually did a playthrough of the original Dreamcast version and noted any of the differences that were present (particularly the textures; one guy kept complaining about how the Gamecube version had changed so many textures, particularly in Twinkle Park, to the point where part 5 was titled “Much Ado about Textures). And surprisingly, most of the credits sequences had different screenshots from the relevant stories, and Super Sonic’s credits just had random screenshots from throughout the game rather than just from Super Sonic’s story.

…You know, I really wish someone would do a playthrough of the Dreamcast version of SA2, because no one ever does that and all I know about the differences comes from text; I’ve never been able to see the differences myself (and I’ve played the Gamecube and PSN releases so much that I’d be able to spot a lot of differences fairly easily).

Seems odd to just say an old random game, is “non-canon” all of a sudden. (That doesn’t have much influence on the canon anyways.) Maybe they’re not proud of how bad the Sega 32-X did.
Still, I wish they’d rerelease “Knuckles Chaotix” some day, it’s one of the few old sidescrolling Sonic games that never got a rerelease. (Except on Game Tap.)
Even “Sonic Boom” seems to be taking some inspiration from it with the electronic tether cords that keep players together similar to what that game had.

@Jarkes
Indeed, though technically SA2 came out in 2001. Did they have to get rid of the SOAP shoes ads from the original DreamCast & GameCube releases?

Also, I love the Skateboard monitors in Classic City Escape. Seriously, skateboards are so stereotypically “90’s” it hurts, yet it took that long for Sonic to actually use one?

Only the Sonic Adventure 1 PSN port doesn’t have widescreen support. The Sonic Adventure 2 PSN port is not only actually widescreen, but it’s basically upped to full HD. Well, at least the lighting anyway; the character models and environments are still taken straight from the Gamecube release. But it ends up looking a lot nicer anyway. You do still have to pay extra for the “Battle” content, but that at least gives you everything the Gamecube release had.

And yes, I saw the wanted posters. As well as the “Missing since 1993” posters for Ray the Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo, a reference to the obscure Sonic arcade game that the two characters were in. And it seems to officially render Knuckles’s Chaotix non-canon, as Mighty was in that game, but when the other Chaotix members returned for Sonic Heroes, the head of Sonic Team said that Knuckles’s Chaotix was now non-canon. If it was still canon, Mighty’s part of the poster would’ve said “Missing since 1995.”
