Is there’s really any need for the hotheadedness?. If that’s an insane use of the tag then I guess a hefty number of images with the text tag don’t really need it if 90% text is the requisite amount.

I think airships and balloons would be the better choice for long distances trips: Far more comfortable and without the constant danger of falling to your death if you stop pedaling.
I would think that when one’s talking short distances or slow speeds (eg flying from one side of Ponyville to another), nothing can beat the ease that a pegasus has. But when one is talking endurance flying, like a cross country flight, flapping the wings (which would be include lifting one’s own weight against gravity) get a lot more tiring than working the legs to pedal, hence the copter might be better. And of course why there are trains to make long distance travel easy for all.
But that’s all just headcanoning :)
On the subject of “there’s got to be an easier way…”
Pegasus flight, in most cases, is the easier way. No storage needed, only basic maintenance (preening, muscle stretches and regular exercise to keep everything healthy and in working order) AND pegasi can hover in place, long considered to be the Holy Grail of flight.
Considering Cherry Berry’s machines in the show and the fact that the Equestrian Government has something in tune with a small fleet of airships I’d say they don’t care - as long as you stay out of the way.
The original joke from the comic summed up a pegasus’ reaction well.
